Head Coach Tom Hilbert
(on UNLV)
“I think the second set of UNLV was more of who they have been statistically. They were at 11 percent error for the season so far and they just sprayed them today. Part of that is that we blocked the ball well, but I don’t think they were comfortable here. One of the things I will tell our team is that we hit .289 in Set 2 and lost, and that is what potentially could happen when we go to Vegas. I think this team (UNLV) is talented.”
“That’s not UNLV’s best effort; that was an on-the-road deal, and I don’t want to fall into a trap. We’re not going to dominate that team like we did. We know more about them now, we know some things to do and we’ll make those adjustments. Let me say that offensively, yes, I thought we were good, and I thought we were especially good from Marlee’s standpoint.”
(on what he liked from his team)
“Things we did great were that we served the ball really well – and it doesn’t show up in aces but it shows up in what they were able to do offensively – and we were good at siding out.”
“We got a win against a good conference team. These guys are going to win a lot of games, and they’re going to be tough to play in Vegas for the second round. Hats off to my team because we did what we needed to do, and we didn’t make a whole lot of mistakes. We had one bad point run in the second set, but after that we played pretty well.”
(on Marlee Reynolds’ career-most 21 kills)
“Marlee Reynolds played great. She was on fire so much that we switched our lineup to Row 5 so she could start in the left-front for sets 3 and 4.”
(on adjustments made throughout the game)
“We told our team some defensive adjustments to make; I don’t know that they came into play. We didn’t miss serves. We missed a bunch of serves in the second set, which is going to happen when you’re trying to be aggressive, which we were. That was the main adjustment.”
(on why UNLV struggled against his team)
“I think its Moby Arena for them and we’re a big blocking team. We did block a few balls while they were trying to wail stuff. We forced the setter to set the long ball, which I don’t think they’re as good at that."
(on his team’s success from a serving standpoint)
“We made serves. I keep emphasizing that, but I think we served the ball well. Six aces isn’t a ton, but it’s not about aces; it’s about disrupting what they do. We forced a bunch of balls to their outside hitters, and their outside hitters hit -.045 and (Alyssa) Wing hit .031, so their outside hitters were struggling.”
Senior setter Deedra Foss
(on setting Marlee Reynolds)
“It was like almost every time I was setting the ball to Marlee she was getting the kill, and if that’s what’s going to work then you keep going to that person.”
(on the importance of this win against UNLV)
“UNLV is a good team, and we knew it was going to be tough, so getting this win really helps us move forward in the conference.”
(on coming back after a Set-2 loss)
“It was a matter of getting points and gaining momentum. We talked about how that second game is how UNLV is; they’re not going to make as many mistakes as they did in the first set.”
Senior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds
(on her career-high 21 kills on .500 hitting)
“I just got out there and I immediately felt comfortable. I felt confident and good internally.”
(on UNLV’s offensive struggle)
“I think our blocking intimidated them a little bit because I know their outside hitters kept wailing the ball out of bounds, and that means your block is doing well if the hitter is trying to hit completely around it.”
(on coming back after a Set-2 loss)
“We knew we were in a hole we dug ourselves into, but we weren’t going to give up. We were going to fight back.”
(on CSU’s upcoming match against San Diego State, a team which snapped the Ram’s 27-match winning streak in 2013)
“I honestly forgot about it a little because I just like to move forward, but we have been talking about it some and it would be sweet to beat them where they beat us last year.”
