TUCSON, Ariz. - The Colorado State women's tennis team finished play in the second annual Wildcat Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Jon Messick says these fall tournaments are important because it gives his team a chance to compete against unfamiliar competition, and prepare for the spring season. The Rams continued to improve, as they won two doubles matches, but only managed one singles victory.
Just like the previous two days, the event began with doubles action. Senior Natalie Heffron and junior Adriana Wojakowska earned an 8-6 victory over UTSA's Shickova and Hallgren in the Wildcat Doubles Bracket. In the same bracket, Aina and Laia Hernandez Soler, twins that transferred to CSU in the summer from Marquette, defeated Texas State's Pieratt and Gutierrez 8-3.
In the championship match of the Cardinals Doubles Bracket, freshman Rebecca Costa and sophomore Madison Porter were defeated by UTEP's Tench and Visscher. In the back draw of the Cardinals Doubles Bracket, juniors Maddie Buxton and Mollie Cooper were beaten by Northern Arizona's duo of Denesik and Brown.
In singles play, Cooper was the only Ram to earn a victory, coming from behind to defeat UTEP's Visscher 2-6, 6-1, 10-5.
Porter, A. Hernandez Soler and Wojakowska were all defeated in two sets, while Costa, L. Hernandez Soler and Buxton were defeated in tie breakers.
For the second day, Heffron was held out from singles play as she battles a minor injury.
