Dave Baldwin, interim head coach
Opening statement…
“Of course that's not the way we wanted to end the season, but this team won 10 games, and it's a special team. And in the locker room we told them 10 wins is still special. Regardless of not finishing the way we wanted to, 10 wins for this team was something special. I'm proud of them as assistant coaches, as players, as a university.”
On Utah’s execution in the game…
“We got beat by a better football team today. They were more physical than us, I think they were faster than us. Again it still comes down to us, we didn't execute the way we wanted, perhaps they took that (away). They're a really good football team, we knew they were, and they took it to us. They hit us with an explosive play right off the bat, and normally we start fast, and they started fast.”
On if Utah was better prepared for the game…
“I don't think they were better prepared. I think we knew what they were going to do, I think we missed some tackles, I don't think we knew that (Troy McCormick) and their backs were that fast; we knew that (Kaelin Clay) was that fast. We knew that their D-line was gonna put pressure on us and when four guys can put pressure on you, it's harder to get open, and that's what they did."
Max Morgan, linebacker
On Utah’s rushing attack…
“Obviously we were prepared for the zone read, they were giving it to us out of a couple of formations that we hadn't seen. A couple missed tackles, there were a couple missed assignments. Hindsight is 20/20, but you gotta give credit to them and their scheme and their execution.”
On finishing the season with 10 wins…
“Ten wins is a big accomplishment and for me, and I'm sure Garrett feels the same way as a senior, you want to look back at what you left behind and hopefully the younger guys and everyone else can continue growing under what we've built and get better next year.”
On interim coach status…
“I'd like to think this team is mature enough to know ... that 10 wins don't fall in your lap. You do it a certain way, by preparation, how you practice, and I don't think that changed at all with the transition.”
Garrett Grayson, quarterback
On the team not being able to run…
“It allows their D-line to kind of pin their ears back I guess and it's obviously something you don't want to do, not allow a D-line to be able to do that. That's why they lead the country in sacks. You have to give them credit, they're physical up front and that showed today.”
On his surprise about today’s game…
“I'm very surprised to be honest. I never in a million years saw that score happening. I think we were more than prepared, that wasn't the thing at all. I think they just came out and just punched us in the mouth and I don't think we necessarily punched them back like we have done so many times.”
On if the loss tarnish a 10-win season…
I don't think it tarnishes it at all. I think any time you win 10 games, I think you should always be proud of that. Not that many teams in the country can say that they won 10 games.
On interim head coach status…
I think coach Baldwin did a hell of a job. He held us all accountable, guys were a little bit more relaxed with coach Baldwin and not so uptight and not so scared. People were able to play within themselves and just have some fun and just enjoy the game and that's something we're all thankful for to be able to just enjoy ourselves and kind of have some fun with it.
Kyle Whittingham, Head Coach, Opening Statement…
“Proud of how our boys played today, and that really was a product of the preparation of the last three weeks. They did a great job the last three weeks preparing themselves the last three weeks. All they had to do was come out and doo what they did the last three weeks and execute.”
On the what worked well in the game…
Travis (Wilson) played well again. (Devontae) Booker was his usual productive self. Defense played outstanding giving up just 10 points to a really explosive offense. That offense has a bunch of good players on it and for our defense to come out and hold them to 10 points was big.
On first offense play…
We had decided to open up with it on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. It was well executed. Ball was a little under thrown or it would have been a touchdown, but we are not going to complain as it was a big chunk of yards.
Devontae Booker, Jr. RB
On rushing for 1,512 yards this season…
I started the season about eight games ago. It was a heck of an accomplishment for me and my team and especially my offensive line.
On what the win means to the program…
It just put us in a position where we still have to work hard. We don’t focus on that we won big, but that we have to work hard in the offseason and get to our main goal of playing in the Rose Bowl.
Travis Wilson, Jr. QB
On how he played in the game…
Definitely happy with how we played. I wish I had a little bit better completion percentage. I missed on a couple of those deep balls. I was seeing that the running was really working for me so I was taking advantage of it.
On the team’s rushing attack…
A lot of the runs I was able to read it, and depending on what I saw, I made my decision. The offensive line did a great job of blocking and having Booker running well too definitely set me up for some good runs.
