EUGENE, Ore. - On the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field Aaliyah Pete finished 17th overall, and second among freshman in the shot put. She was honored as an honorable mention All-American.
Competing in her first national championship, Pete threw 51 feet, 7 inches on her first attempt, but couldn't surpass that mark in three tries to make the final. The winner, Christina Hillman of Iowa State, threw a career-best 58-2.
"Aaliyah competed well," said Head Coach Brian Bedard. "She was trying too hard on her first two throws so she mistimed her finish. Her third throw had great turn, but missed the push on the shot. She was disappointed because she knows she's capable of more. Aaliyah has had a phenomenal freshman year, breaking multiple rookie records for CSU. She has a bright future ahead of her."
Up next for select Colorado State athletes is the United States Track & Field Outdoor Championships on June 26-29 in Sacramento, Calif., and the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships on July 5-6 back in Eugene, Ore.
