Head Coach Tom Hilbert
(on the serving game, particularly JR DS Kaitlind Bestgen)
“One of our main goals was to win the serving-passing battle, and we for sure did. If we can get half the production that we got out of Kaitlind today throughout the year, that’ll be really good.”
(on true FR OH Jasmine Hanna’s collegiate debut)
“Jasmine Hanna coming in and hitting .333 on the left was big. She’s been really impressing us in practice as of late, and did some nice things today.”
(additional thoughts on the newcomers seeing the court for the first time)
“Jasmine’s composure and her management was good. I thought Axi (Poletto), even in Set 2, she took two really nice swings, both of which were dug – one for a kill. You feel bad for her, because she was doing exactly what she was supposed to do.”
“We’re slowly figuring out who’s going to play where, and I thought it was a good way to start.”
(on SR OH Marlee Reynolds, who led all players with 13 kills)
“She was really important, and I don’t mean this in a mean way, but that’s her job. That’s what I’ve been trying to tell her every day: Come out as if you are the terminating point for our team. The beautiful thing about her is that she doesn’t give stuff away. That’s maturity, and that’s what we need. I’ll take this any day from her.”
(on the rest of the offense)
“Dri (Culbert) was very good, and she has not practiced all that much for us; I think just four or five practices. Her and Deedra (Foss) picked up right where they left off last year.”
(on other strengths)
“I thought we did a nice job blocking, and we finished the match out offensively very strong.”
(on his thoughts on the win)
“It was a good effort by us, and good point-scoring for sure. I think we’re going to play a better team tonight in Santa Barbara, and an even better team tomorrow in Marquette. It’ll be a good weekend test for us.”
SR OH Marlee Reynolds
(on her offensive production)
“My first two swings, I felt like I started in a rhythm. I felt really good. Deej (Foss) was feeding me balls and our defense was playing well, and our serve-receive was playing well.”
(on the team’s defensive play)
“I thought they did really well. They’ve been killing it in practice and they carried it over to the game, which was awesome.”
(on how strong defense helps her on offense)
“It helps me relax a little more knowing I have three or four girls behind me who are going to pick up a ball if I miss a block and will give me time to transition and be in good position to get a kill.
FR OH Jasmine Hanna
(on her collegiate debut)
“Even coming in off the bench I was super nervous. For me and most players, when they’re nervous and tentative, that’s when they tend to make mistakes. I just tried to ease into it, and it makes it a lot easier having great teammates around you.”
JR DS Kaitlind Bestgen
(on her serving game)
“I’ve changed my serve around a lot. I was starting a jump float and was increasing the velocity of it. I do feel like if I’m producing aces my risk window is going to be better. I will miss a few more balls, but I’m going to get more aces.
(on whether the score affects how she serves)
“I just go out and serve tough – putting the ball on the court and serving at the people I know I need to be serving at.”
