POSTGAME NOTES -- Aug. 29, 2013
Colorado State 31, Colorado 17

  • Friday's captains were LB Aaron Davis, QB Garrett Grayson, LB Max Morgan and OL Ty Sambrailo.
  • During Friday's season-opener, 17 Rams saw their first action in the green and gold uniform:
RS-FR DB Justin Sweet, SO DB Preston Hodges, RS-FR LB Kiel Robinson, FR DB Shun Johnson, JR Dee Hart, RS-FR OL Jake Bennett, RS-FR WR Xavier Williams, JR TE Steven Walker, RS-FR LS Trent Sieg, RS-FR LB Evan Colorito, FR DB Kevin Nutt Jr., FR WR Deionte Gaines, RS-FR WR Elroy Masters Jr., RS-FR Trae Moxley, RS-FR LB Pierre Copeland II, JR RB Treyous Jarrells and RS-FR WR Sammie Long IV.
  • CSU's 14-point victory was their largest victory over Colorado since the Rams' 41-14 victory in 1999.
  • The Buffs last score came at the 9:47 mark of the third quarter. After that point, the Rams rattled off 21 unanswered points.
  • Running back Dee Hart entered the game on the third play, a third-and-14, and rushed for seven yards. In the end, Hart rushed for a career high 139 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. Tonight's two scores were Hart's second, and third, collegiate touchdowns. His first came in Alabama's 49-0 victory over Tennessee-Chattanooga on Nov. 23, 2013.
  • In the first half, Hart accounted for 72 of Colorado State's 119 total yards, with 58 coming on the ground and 14 receiving yards.
  • Treyous Jarrells, a junior college transfer from Grossmont College, recorded his first rush early in the second quarter, taking the handoff for seven yards. Jarrells was dominant in the second half rushing for over 100 yards before finishing with 121 yards.
  • The last time Colorado State had two 100-yard rushers in one game was Sept. 28, 2002 at Nevada when QB Bradlee Van Pelt (128) and Cecil Sapp (125) each eclipsed the 100-yard mark.
  • The last time CSU had two running backs rush for 100 yards in the same game was in 1996, in the Rams' season-opener against Tennessee-Chattanooga (Jaime Blake - 138, Calvin Branch 127).
  • Senior quarterback Garrett Grayson became only the third CSU quarterback to defeat Colorado twice in his career.
  • The Rams did not get off to the fast start that the coaching staff wanted. In the first quarter CSU could only manage 26 yards of total offense, but over the next three quarters the team racked up 349 yards of total offense.
  • The Rams rushed for 266 yards, while the Buffs ran for 134. Under McElwain, the Rams are 12-1 when outrushing their opponent.
  • The Rams kneeled the ball and ran out the clock to secure their 22nd victory over Colorado. This kneel, a one-yard loss, took the Rams from 267 rushing yards to 266. 267 rushing yards would have tied the most rushing yards against Colorado in the Rocky Mountain Showdown.
  • Head Coach Jim McElwain is the first CSU head coach since Bob Davis to defeat in-state Colorado twice in his first three seasons.
  • McElwain is now 3-1 against teams from the Pac-12, defeating Colorado twice and Washington State in the 2013 Gildan New Mexico Bowl.
  • Senior wide receiver Charles Lovett caught a pass early in the second quarter, giving him a catch in the last 22 games that he has played in, a streak dating back to Nov. 19, 2011 at TCU.
  • Linebacker SteveO Michel registered a career-high with seven tackles. His previous high was three tackles, which he did twice in 2013, but most recently against Air Force (Nov. 30, 2013).
  • Defensive lineman Terry Jackson tied a career-high with six tackles.
  • Senior kicker Jared Roberts extended his streak of consecutive PATs made to 67, a school record.
  • Late in the fourth quarter, Roberts connected on a 52-yard field goal, tied for the second-longest in his career. This falls just outside of Colorado State's top-10.
  • For the first time since 2009, CSU's opening touchdown has come on the ground. John Mosure scored from one-yard out in the 2009 edition of the Rocky Mountain Showdown. It is the 24th-time the Rams have opened the season with a rushing touchdown.
