Head Coach Tom Hilbert
(on the win)
"The overall package that you saw today was good. We were doing all of the little things well - we were passing well, serving well, digging balls. That makes the other team work. You don't really know how good a team is until they have to earn 20, 21 points, and that's what had to happen against these guys."
(on setting the tone with a 6-0 run to begin the match)
"Marquette is a good volleyball team. I think you saw that in the other two matches they played this weekend. We did a nice job in the first eight points of this match - before (Lindsey) Gosh even got to the front row - of running some points, blocking (Autumn) Bailey a couple of times, making some defensive plays and kind of setting the tone, certainly for the first set."
(on a back-and-forth second set, which saw 10 ties and six lead changes)
"In the second set, they were playing good, we were playing good. It was tied for the first two-thirds of that set, and then we kind of pulled away. I think we were doing it with pretty good serving, and we were passing their serves pretty well. One of our keys was to be evenly distributed, and it was very evenly distributed if you look at total attempts."
(on not giving away points)
"It really was a well-set match by Deedra (Foss), and we didn't have a whole lot of giveaways. The nine service errors is probably more than I'd to have, but eight unforced, four blocks . . . I'll take that any day against a team of this caliber."
(on beating a team like Marquette)
"Marquette won the BIG EAST; they were 11th in the country in RPI. They were a good team, and I think they're going to have a good season this year. I consider this to be a very, very good win for us."
(on holding Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Autumn Bailey to negative hitting)
"We're very good defensively. I'm impressed every day we go out, and I think we're making plays all the time, and I like that. Deedra (Foss) was on her two out of three times, and got a lot of blocks. We did a nice job blocking her; she's a good athlete and a good hitter who really brings good heat, so I thought fundamentally and technically, we did a good job blocking her, as well as knowing when she was going to get the ball."
(on what his team can still work on)
"I'm a glass half-empty guy. I saw things we need to get better at, and we will work on those things. I'd like to have consistency in the outside hitting position. I believe in Acacia (Andrews), and I think she's a great blocker and I think she's doing some good things, but I've seen her be better offensively than she is right now. We have to find that."
(on Deedra Foss' deceptiveness as a setter)
"Late in the second set, they were doubling Acacia and jumped with her because Deedra (Foss) is so deceptive; she then threw it back to Dri (Culbert) and she murdered it. Every point counts the same, but when they're dynamic and dramatic it makes a difference, especially at the end of a set."
(on what he was surprised about this weekend, and the freshman class)
"Jasmine (Hanna) is better than I thought. She started falling into a pattern that hurt her toward the end of the second set, but she's a talented kid and we can get a lot out of her. I love our entire freshman class, to be honest. I like Sanja (Cizmic). Sanja never got enough time to be comfortable, so now she's probably a little antsy. She's a very good volleyball player, and I think Axi (Poletto) is a very good volleyball player. Those guys are good."
(on the blocking game being better than expected)
"It's good because we're athletic and Luke's (Murray, assistant coach) doing a good job of telling them where to go. I'm not saying we're not a good blocking team - we are - but there are areas where we can get better. There are technical things that we can improve upon, especially with the younger players. I want to be better at that skill, because that's' been the trademark of this team for so long; we're athletic enough to be really good at it, and I want to be really good at it."
JR L Jaime Colaizzi
(on taking Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Autumn Bailey out of her game)
"Her first hit we came out and blocked, and then the next couple we dug up; I think that made a huge difference. She still got her kills, but we got in her head, and I think that made a big difference."
(on how good the team is defensively)
"This is the best defense we've had for as long as I can remember, even watching the games. Batty's (Katelin Batten) year, 2009, was also a really good defensive year. I'd kind of compare this year to that year. We just have so much experience all along our back line, which is awesome; it's not usually like that. It's going to be a good year. I think we're going to be able to compete with a lot of big teams this year because of our defense."
(on what she came away with from the weekend)
"What I was really pleased with was the impact of our freshmen. I think they all played really well. All three of them got in and did what they could do, and they really made an impact. I was really proud of all of them."
(on questions the team answered during the season's opening weekend)
"I think we learned a lot about ourselves and what a lot of players are good at, and what we have to work on. I think our coaches will have good stuff for us to work on in practice, but it definitely answered questions."
JR OPP Adrianna Culbert
(on the deceptiveness of Deedra Foss' setting ability)
"It really helps, especially as a pin player. The blockers don't set up on one person; it allows us to have a lot of one-on-one situations."
(on playing with Jaime Colaizzi in the back row)
"She's amazing. Playing defense with her, you never have a doubt that she's not going to make a play. She's just someone who you just have so much comfort with because she's so good and she sees so much. I love playing back row with her; it makes it easy."
SR MB Kelsey Snider
(on the play of the defense)
"More digs means more opportunities to kill the ball and point-score. I think it helps our transition game, as well."
