Men's golf recap: CSU captures team title at 2014 Ram Masters

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - All five players in the CSU lineup finished in the top 25 of the 84-player field on Day 2 of the 2014 Ram Masters Invitational presented by Pedersen Toyota, helping Colorado State hold off Kansas and Denver to capture the team championship of the third-annual event, the squad's first victory under head coach Christian Newton, at Fort Collins Country Club.
"I'm so proud of my guys and how they responded to the challenge today," said Newton. "KU and DU are good; we had tall order to hold them off. Jimmy (Makloski) and Pat (Winther) were huge for us today. They started us off and were steady most of the day. Cam (Harrell) was or rock again and we leaned on him hard.
"It was a fantastic team effort overall! This is my first win as a head coach and I will never forgot this," added Newton. "We will take a few days to catch our breath and get school work in order then it's time to get ready for one of our toughest competitions of the year at UNM."
The Rams entered the final round of action with a five-stroke lead and carded a 285, the second-lowest of the day, to hold off a hard charge by former CSU head coach Jamie Bermel's Kansas Jayhawks and come away with the four-stroke victory. The Rams closed the tournament with a 13-over 855, while KU shot 859 (+19) and DU rounded out the three-team race with a score of 862 (+22).
Harrell, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., captured the sixth top-10 finish of his collegiate career, pacing the Rams to earn fourth place with a three-round score of 212 (+2). He opened with a 71 in Round 1 and shot a 1-under 69 in Round 2 before closing with a 2-over 72 on Tuesday, finishing two strokes behind individual medalist Drew McCullough of Wyoming (210), and one stroke behind Kansas' Chase Hanna and Nevada's Corey Eddings, who tied for second at 1-over.
"Today was awesome," said Harrell after securing the victory. "We hung in there all day and got the job done. It feels great to finally get a team win and hopefully there's more to come the rest of the season."
Junior Dominic Kieffer and senior Patrick Winther each finished tied for 13th with three-round scores of 217 (+7). Kieffer bounced back from 8-over 78 in Round 2, while Winther matched his opening round of 1-over 71. The duo tied sophomore Jimmy Makloski for low round on the day for the Rams. Makloski, who carded back-to-back 74s in Rounds 1 and 2, also notched a 1-over 71 on Tuesday to finish tied for 24th and round out the scoring for CSU.
Sophomore Alec Bone, who keyed the Rams Round 2 push with a 69 (-1) yesterday afternoon, fell off his pace on Tuesday, closing with a 6-over 76. But Bone finished tied for 17th with a three-round score of 218 (+8) to notch his first-career top-20 finish.
Three individuals were also in action for the Rams, led by freshman Max Oelfke. The native of Wedemark, Germany, paced all individual in the competition, finishing just five strokes behind the tournament champion, and three strokes behind Harrell with a 5-over 215 in just his second collegiate tournament. Freshman Trey Kidd (229) and sophomore Logan Iverson (230) finished tied for 57th and tied for 60th, respectively.
Nevada (867) and McNeese State (870) rounded out the top-5 team standings, followed by Utah Valley (876), Rice (878), Wichita State (879), Wyoming (883) and Sacramento State (884), which finished sixth-10th, respectively, separated by just eight strokes. Air Force and Northern Colorado tied for 11th with scores of 900, while George Washington (909) finished 13th, Abilene Christian (919) finished 14th and South Dakota State (946) finished 15th.
Next up, the Rams return to competition Sept. 26-27 at the William H. Tucker intercollegiate, hosted by Mountain West foe New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.
