Tennis recap: CSU begins Mountain Regionals in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Colorado State began the UTSA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships Wednesday, going 1-1 in doubles play and 1-4 in singles action. Senior Maddie Buxton earned the Rams’ singles win, while the tandem of Caroline Henderson and Celine Voss was victorious over Northern Colorado in doubles.
In the morning session, Henderson and Voss picked up an 8-3 victory over Northern Colorado’s Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby. The Rams were nearly perfect in Round 1, with Aina Hernandez Soler and Madison Porter narrowly missing a big victory over New Mexico, falling 8-7. Buxton and Emily Kolbow had a bye.
In singles play, CSU went to three sets in three of its matches, with Henderson winning Set 1 over Denver and Hernandez Soler being victorious, 7-6, in a second set against Idaho. Buxton blanked Montana State’s Laura Middel in Set 1, 6-0, and then rebounded from a 6-4 Set-2 loss to win the match, 6-2, in the deciding frame.
Competing in the tournament is 128 players from 18 of the top teams from the Mountain Region. Action continues Thursday with Round 2 of doubles and two more rounds of singles play.
