LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Colorado State tennis team went 3-1 during Friday’s action at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships, including a perfect 3-0 in singles play. The tournament was delayed by nearly 3 hours due to rain in the morning.
While the Rams have been more consistent in doubles play, singles has been an area where they have struggled throughout the fall. CSU was on point on Friday, though, with freshman Emily Kolbow and senior Maddie Buxton winning their additional match, and senior Aina Hernandez Soler being victorious in her singles back draw match.
Kolbow came from behind to defeat Idaho’s Claire Yang (4-6, 7-6, 10-7), Buxton beat BYU’s Erica Valimaki (6-3, 3-6, 10-1) and Hernandez Soler swept BYU’s Demi Daniels (7-6, 6-4). Buxton also won her singles match on Wednesday.
After victories on both Wednesday and Thursday to advance to the doubles Round of 16, Caroline Henderson and Celine Voss were unable to get past BYU’s Toby Miclat and Taylah Beckman, dropping the match 8-2. The BYU tandem advanced to the doubles semifinals later in the evening.
The top 18 teams from the region will continue play Saturday with semifinals and quarterfinals of doubles, and semifinals, consolation and added singles matches. The tournament, which features 128 players, will conclude Sunday.
