AUSTIN/HOUSTON, Texas – The Colorado State swimming and diving squad finished its second day split across the University of Texas Diving Invitational and the Phill Hansel Invite in Houston on Friday.
CSU remained in sixth place at the Phill Hansel Invite, led by strong performances in the 400 IM and the 100 Fly. Allie Jacobs took fourth (4:24.40) and Mackenzie Halligan placed seventh, as both advanced to the A finals in the 36-swimmer 400 IM event. Freshman Carmen Mand took sixth in the 100 Fly (55.95), during a day that head coach Christopher Woodard felt was another solid one for his Rams.
“We had a couple missed opportunities and a couple DQ’s, but I’m very pleased with our overall performance,” Woodard said.
CSU received a pair of fourth-place finishes from Jenna Beaury (100 Breast, 1:02.81) and Tonicia Thomas (100 Back, lifetime-best 55.31). Jess Shepard was sixth in the 100 Back (55.59), and the 800 Free Relay group featuring Colleen Olson, Teagan Griffith, Halligan and Karin Roh also placed sixth (7:29.82).
At the UT Diving Invitational, Ariana Milone led CSU with a 16th-place result in the 1-Meter Springboard with a score of 247.65 in the prelims. The meet with close tomorrow with the platform diving event.
Woodard has been happy with the way his team has responded at both meets, and feels confident his group can build on their performances and finish strong tomorrow.
“We’ve been preparing for this all fall, with our early invitational event immediately after our dual against New Mexico,” Woodard said. “The hardest thing for most teams is to bounce back on the third day of a long meet, and from what I’ve seen I expect us to come out tomorrow and continue to get better.”
