MW Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Mountain West announced its men's and women's outdoor track and field all-conference teams Monday, with 28 Rams qualifying for 43 awards. All-conference selections were awarded to the top three finishers in each event at last week's conference championships held in San Diego, Calif.

The announcement included head coach Brian Bedard's two Outdoor Coach of the Year awards after leading both the men's and women's squads to an MW championship sweep. The honors are his second and third career awards in his nine years at the helm of the Colorado State program. He was also named Coach of the Year following the women's outdoor conference championship in 2008.

The 28 student-athletes to receive recognition obliterated the program's previous Mountain West-era record of 22 individuals set in 2006. That season CSU compiled 30 all-conference award performances, a record that was also broken last weekend with the Rams' tally of 43.

This year Colorado State won eight titles in the 400-meter dash, the 4x100-meter relay, all four throwing events and the decathlon.

Josh Cogdill won the men's decathlon last Thursday, collecting 7,294 points to crush his personal record and take the title of best decathlete in the conference. His total points are good for the third-best personal record in CSU history for the men's decathlon. It was the fourth-best total in MW outdoor championship history and the highest conference championship total ever contributed by a Colorado State athlete.

On Friday, CSU throwers Tyler Schultz and Kiah Hicks won the men's and women's hammer throws, respectively, marking the first time since 2005 that the Rams earned victories in both events. Hicks launched a toss of 203 feet, 8 inches to earn the victory and finish in the top two at the conference meet for the third straight season. Schultz, who finished fourth in the event in 2014, continued his consistent junior campaign with a throw of 207-1 for the win.

A hammer throw victory was not all Friday had in store for Hicks. The senior, competing in her final outdoor conference championship meet, unleashed absolute dominance in the women's discus throw with a monster toss of 196 feet, 7 inches on her last throw of the day. She won the event by over 12 feet, setting a MW outdoor championship record. However, that was hardly the most impressive part of Hicks' victory. Her throw falls just shy of a CSU record and currently ranks as the second-best toss in the entire NCAA this year.

In the shot put, Aaliyah Pete unleashed a massive throw of 55 feet, 7.5 inches, which set a CSU and Mountain West all-time record while winning the event by nearly three feet. Only a sophomore, Pete has already established herself among the conference's all-time greats, and she has tremendous potential to make a name for herself nationally over the next two seasons.

Junior javelin thrower Jessi Macedo left San Diego a conference champion, setting a Colorado State women's outdoor record with a huge toss of 165-5 to win the event by over 15 feet.

On the track, the young and talented women's 4x100-meter relay team of Lettia Wilson, Abby Simpson, Leah Fair and Lorenda Holston showed the conference that they will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come, taking the MW title with a time of 45.36 seconds. Then sophomore Emily Romo added to the lengthy list of conference titles, taking the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 53.99 and capping an impressive 2015 campaign.
