Rams trio opens play at U.S. Amateur

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – A trio of current Colorado State men’s golfers opened play at the U.S. Amateur on Monday as part of the 312 player field at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Incoming freshman Jake Staiano, a product of Cherry Hills Village, Colo., and Valor Christian High School, paces the Colorado State contingency, after posting an opening round of 1-over 71 on the North Course. Staiano carded four birdies in his opening round.

Junior Alec Bone, the most experienced Ram in the field, is tied for 294th after shooting a 10-over par (80) with a pair of birdies on the South Course in his first round. The Phoenix, Ariz., native was 1-under on the back nine through six holes, before a combined 7-over on his last three holes of the day.

Kyler Dunkle, a second-year player for the Rams out of Larkspur, Colo., and Douglas County High School, is six strokes off Bone’s pace in 311th.

Round 2 of stroke play continues Tuesday. Dunkle is the first Ram off the tee, opening his second round of action at 7:50 a.m. CT off of Hole 10 on the South Course. Staiano will tee off starting at 8:30 a.m. CT, playing the North Course and starting off of Hole 10. Bone is slated to tee off of Hole 1 on the South Course starting at 9 a.m. CT.

With three competitors in the field, Colorado State ranks among the national leaders in terms of colleges represented by current players or alumni playing in the 2015 U.S. Amateur. The Rams trio matches Arizona State, Baylor, College of Charleston, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Houston, North Carolina State, Oregon, San Diego State, Texas and UCLA, and trails only Florida, South Florida, and USC with five each, and Auburn, Duke Florida State, Illinois, Kansas, Kent State, Michigan and Oklahoma State with four each.
