FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team traveled south this past weekend to participate in the Air Force Invitational. The three-day event consisted of singles and doubles matches in a duel-style tournament. The field consisted of eight teams: In addition to CSU and host Air Force, regional foes Denver, Northern Colorado and Wyoming participated, in addition to Abilene Christian, Drake, Texas State and Utah State.

Sophomore Emily Kolbow represented CSU at the No.1 singles position, winning her opening draw against Texas State in two incredibly tight sets (7-5, 7-6 (5)). Following her opening win, she was unable to continue her run, losing to Air Force in the semifinals (6-4, 6-2), and then again in the third-place matchup against Abilene Christian (6-0, 6-2).

Two of CSU’s freshmen, Alyssa Grijalva and Riley Reeves, stepped up their roles during their second collegiate tournament, playing at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. At the No. 2 draw, Grijalva was winless but forced three sets in her first match – winning the opening set vs. Air Force. Reeves defeated her foe from Northern Colorado on Friday after dropping the first set (3-6, 6-1, 6-2). She followed that performance into the semifinals, where she was defeated in three sets – this time winning the first set, 6-2, before losing the next two.

From the No. 6 and 7 positions, freshman Sandra Keta and senior Madison Porter lost their first matches but defeated foes from Texas State and Northern Colorado, respectively, to work back up to the consolation final. Freshman Solene Crawley (No. 5) also went 1-2. Senior Celine Voss played from the No. 4 position but was unable to win either of her matches.

The highlight of the weekend, though was in doubles play, with CSU posting a winning record.

“Our doubles play improved over the weekend,” head coach Jarod Camerota said. “We’re working on doing the simple things great. We still have a ways to go, but we’re on the right track.”

the Rams’ No. 1 duo of Porter/Grijalva won two of their four contests over the weekend, advancing to the Flight A championship on Day 1. The pair did not compete on Sunday, with Kolbow/Reeves sliding up from No. 2.

At the No. 1 doubles for Colorado State was the duo for Porter/Grijalva who won two of their four contests during the weekend. The pair defeated teams from both Denver and Abilene Christian.
The Rams’ No. 2 doubles pair of Kolbow/Reeves went three and one in doubles play and won flight B. They defeated a Texas State pair (6-4), and beat a duo from Wyoming (6-3). They defeated Texas State in their first match from the No. 1 position on Sunday, before falling to Air Force later in the day, 7-6 (5).

On Friday, the tandem defeated Wyoming in its opener, and on Saturday, won its flight with victories over Texas State and Wyoming. Overall, the duo went 4-2 in doubles play.

C. Voss/S. Crawley went 3-3 overall from the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. S. Keta/A. Grijalva won their only doubles contest, 7-5 over Northern Colorado (No. 3 on Sunday), while C. Henderson/S. Keta lost their only doubles match, from No. 4.

CSU will have some time off before its third tournament of the fall season. The Rams will next be in action Oct. 21-23, hosting the Colorado State Invitational, which will be played at the University Tennis Complex (2400 Research Blvd.).
