LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Not a single event had been completed on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round when thunderstorms rolled into Lawrence, Kan., causing repeated weather delays that eventually turned into a suspension of the meet. Heavy rains and high winds tormented the University of Kansas' Rock Chalk Park throughout the afternoon, causing team tents to be overturned and competition to be stopped.
Colorado State senior Jessi Macedo was ranked 11th in the women's javelin competition when the meet was suspended, tossing 153 feet, 7 inches on her third throw for her best mark of the day. The third flight of javelin throwers had not yet competed. Fellow senior Tyler Schultz was the only other Ram to begin competition before the storms began, recording a mark of 191-5 in the hammer throw. Unfortunately, the mark will not qualify Schultz for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11, as he was 28th in the standings when weather delays began. The top 12 athletes in each event advance to Eugene to compete for national titles.
Competition will resume Friday in Lawrence with a revised schedule of events, beginning with the women's 10,000-meter run at 7 a.m. MT. With the exception of the men's and women's 10,000-meter runs, all track events will be run as quarterfinals without preliminary rounds of competition. The winners of each of six heats plus the six next-fastest times overall will advance to Eugene. The men's hammer throw and women's javelin throw will both resume at 8 a.m. MT, beginning a full day of field events.
On Thursday afternoon, KU officials announced that Friday's men's and women's pole vault competitions would be contested indoors at the university's Anschutz Pavilion. All track events will be streamed online, beginning at 7 a.m. MT with the women's 10,000-meter run. Stay tuned to @CSURAMSTRACK on Twitter for additional updates.
