FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State men’s golfer Blake Cannon has been named Mountain West Golfer of the Month, the league announced today. It is the first in-season conference award for the senior.

To say that September was a good month for Cannon would be a gross understatement. The Mesa, Ariz. native posted his first two collegiate wins and a third top-10 finish in the Rams’ three events so far. Cannon started the season with a tie for 10th at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, just the third top-10 finish of his CSU career. However, that was surpassed by an impressive six-day span, where
Cannon captured not one but two medalist honors during that time.

His first came Sept. 19-20 at CSU’s home event, the Ram Masters Invitational Presented by Pedersen Toyota, winning his first collegiate tournament title and helping Colorado State win its third straight team championship in the event. He shot career bests of 64 (18 holes) and 7-under 203 (54 holes) at the Ram Masters, winning the tournament by a record four shots. His final score of 203 was a tournament record for 54 holes, with his 203 tied for the ninth lowest 54-hole total in school history and the 64 tied for the sixth lowest 18-hole score.

The squad headed almost immediately to Albuquerque, N.M. for the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, the nation’s oldest fall college tournament and hosted by the University of New Mexico at one of the six sites for the 2016 NCAA Regionals. Cannon continued his stellar play from earlier in the week, shooting under par in each of his three rounds and posting a 6-under 210 to win the tournament by two shots. He became just the second CSU player ever to win medalist honors at the Tucker Intercollegiate and joined the highly prestigious list of champions at this event, including future World Golf Hall of Famer Tiger Woods, Hall of Famer Johnny Miller, Bobby Clampett, Duffy Waldorf, Tim Herron and Bruce Lietzke.

He is now one of only nine players in CSU history to win multiple individual tournaments in their collegiate career and the seventh with multiple tournament victories in a single season. He leads CSU in scoring with a 70.11 stroke average, helping the Rams to a 42-4 mark so far in head-to-head competition this season.

The Rams will now have two weeks to prepare for the Paintbrush Intercollegiate, Mon.-Tue., Oct. 10-11 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo.
