Rams Battle Back Late In Round, Stand In Fifth Through 36 Holes of St. Mary's Invite

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Colorado State men's golf rallied in the final 11 holes of the day but slipped three spots and is in fifth place through 36 holes of the 2017 Saint Mary's Invitational, Nov. 7. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Saint Mary's College (Calif.), is being played at the famed Poppy Hills Golf Club (Par 71 – 7,002 yards) in Pebble Beach, Calif.

The Rams started the round in a tie for second but struggled in the early holes, standing at 7-over through the first seven holes of the day. However, the squad rallied to keep it from getting away, pulling back five shots and finishing the day at 2-over 286 and is at 1-over 569 for the two-round total. Southern California shot a tournament-best 16-under 268 for the day and jumped from fifth to first at 13-under 555, one shot ahead of Stanford in second at 12-under 556. Host Saint Mary's moved up to third at 3-under 565, followed by opening-round leader San Francisco at even-par 568 and Colorado State. Just six shots separate third from seventh heading into tomorrow's final 18.

"We are in a great spot especially after a shaky start," head coach Christian Newton. "We were 7-over through seven and did a great job fighting back the last 11 holes. Tomorrow is big round for us."

All five Rams were within two shots of each other from even-par 71 to 2-over 73 for the day. Freshman Parathakorn Suyasri is the top CSU player in a tie for 14th at 2-under 140. Senior Colton Yates shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 26th at 1-over 143, one shot ahead of sophomore AJ Ott and senior Max Oelfke at 2-over 144, including Ott's even-par 71 on the day. Junior Jake Staiano also had an even-par 71 for the day and is tied for 55th at 6-over 148. Southern Cal's Justin Suh is the 36-hole individual leader at 9-under 133, three shots better than teammate Kaito Onishi.

CSU will start the third and final round at 8:27 am PT, teeing off on No. 10 and playing with BYU.
