BOISE, Idaho – Colorado State opened its Mountain West slate on Friday afternoon, falling to the Boise State Broncos, 5-2. The loss snapped the Rams’ two-match winning streak. Despite the loss, CSU (6-9, 0-1 MW) was competitive throughout the match, winning two singles competitions and one doubles court.

Boise State (11-5) earned the doubles point, but not without a fight from the Rams. After the Broncos’ No. 1 tandem won, 6-4, CSU’s No. 2 pair of Riley Reeves and Celine Voss knotted the score up with a 6-4 win of their own. Ultimately, Boise State earned the first point of the day with a win at No. 3, also by a score of 6-4.

The Broncos raced out to a 3-0 advantage with wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, but that’s when CSU made things interesting. Freshman Alyssa Grijalva – who moved up to No. 2 – won her third consecutive match by defeating Lilian Poling. Grijalva battled back from a 6-1 loss in Set 1, winning 6-4 in Set 2 and 6-1 in Set 3.

CSU also won at No. 1 singles, but not before Boise State had clinched the match with a win at No. 4.

At No. 1, sophomore Emily Kolbow knocked off Anja Dokic in three sets. Dokic is the reigning Mountain West Player of the Week after beating No. 27 Carol Yang (UNLV) last week in Las Vegas. Kolbow fell behind with a 6-4 loss in the first set, but came back to win 6-2 in the second set and 6-4 in the rubber frame.

At No. 6 singles, senior Madison Porter won her first set, 6-3, but was unable to hold her lead, falling in three sets.

The Rams will be back in action Sunday morning against Utah State and look to pick up a big conference road win before heading home next weekend. Sunday’s match can be streamed online for free.
