AUSTIN, Texas - Colorado State's Mostafa Hassan took first place in the shot put, while Janelle Lincks finished first in heat three of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as each qualified for the NCAA Championships at the NCAA West Preliminary on Friday from Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Hassan, who competed in the second of two shot put flights on Friday, threw the shot put 67-8.75 (20.64m) for the top mark at the NCAA West Preliminary by over a foot. Hassan's top throw was the first of his three attempts, each of which exceeded 20 meters. No athlete in the nation other than Hassan has thrown the shot put as far as Hassan did on Friday.
Lincks took the lead early in the third heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and did not relinquish it, winning the race by over three seconds. Lincks' time of 10:14.34 was the ninth-best overall in the event at the NCAA West Preliminary. The senior is the first Ram to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the event since 2012 (Nicole Peters). Laura Yarrow finished within the top third of the NCAA West Preliminary field, placing 15th in the steeple with a time of 10:26.13.
Lorenda Holston advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles with a second-place finish in the sixth heat of the event on Friday. Holston clocked a time of 13.29 (wind aid of 3.4) and finished 14th overall out of the 24 qualifiers.
Kelcey Bedard finished off a solid sophomore outdoor campaign with a top-20 finish in the discus (169-11/51.81m). McKenzie Wright placed 24th in the high jump with a mark of 5-8.5 (1.74m), while Emily Romo placed 23rd in the quarterfinals of the 400 meters (56.10).
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Brian Bedard
"Considering we kind of trained Mostafa (Hassan) through (this meet) - not necessarily rested up - and that the conditions were extremely hot, I thought he did quite well. Three throws over 20 meters…he looked like a veteran out there. I was really proud of his composure and the way he competed today."
Colorado State distance coach Art Siemers
"Janelle (Lincks) is just a warrior. It's that simple. She felt a little under the weather when we first got here, but just really composed herself this week. She didn't let anything get to her and ran really smart. She took the lead when she knew she could hold the pace to the finish. She stayed composed and won her heat, which is what we came here to do."
NOTES
- The Rams now have seven athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships. Linnea Jonsson (hammer), Grant Fischer (10,000 meters) and Jerrell Mock (10,000 meters) qualified at the NCAA West Preliminary on Friday. Each of Josh Cogdill and Hunter Price are also qualified in the decathlon.
- Only 19 athletes in the world have a better mark this outdoor season than Mostafa Hassan's 67-8.75 (20.64m) on Friday.
- Kelcey Bedard's 20th-place finish in the discus improved upon her ranking (No. 27) entering Friday's competition.
