Epperson joins Rams after three years as an assistant with the Colorado School of Mines

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State track & field and cross country programs have added Andrew Epperson as an assistant coach. CSU announced the hiring of Epperson on Wednesday.

Epperson joins the Rams after spending three years as an assistant track & field and cross country coach at the Colorado School of Mines. Among his accomplishments at Mines was helping lead the 2015 men's cross country program to the school's first-ever NCAA championship in any sport.

"I thought hard and long about who could really help our program keep moving in the right direction," Colorado State head cross country coach Art Siemers said. "I had coached Andrew for three years at Mines and he was one of the hardest workers I have ever coached in my career. He's a huge student of the sport and loves track & field and cross country. He's got the experience as a top student-athlete and as a successful coach, and balanced competition with academics at one of the best engineering schools in the country. Those things are what I was looking for in a coach, and that's the kind of role model we want for our student-athletes."

In his three-year stint at Mines, Epperson helped lead the men's cross country team to national finishes of fourth in 2014, first in 2015 and third in 2016. Over that same span, the women's team placed 10th, 19th and 13th nationally. In addition to the cross country program's success, the 2016 men's track & field team won the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Epperson coached his distance athletes to 46 total All-America honors, with 11 during cross country and 35 in track & field.

"I have a huge passion for running and working with student athletes and am excited to start a new chapter at Colorado State," Epperson said. "The men's and women's teams have improved vastly in the past couple years and look to be on the brink of something very special. I look forward to bringing my experience from Mines and applying it to the season and challenges ahead."

As an athlete, Epperson was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American in cross country, earning accolades in 2012 and 2013. He continues to run professionally, finishing as the No. 4 American at the 2016 Chicago Marathon (12th overall). Notably, Epperson was a Feb. 2016 qualifier for the Olympic Marathon Trials.

Epperson remains ranked in Mines' all-time top 10 in the 3,000 meters, as well as the program's top five in the indoor 5,000 meters, the outdoor 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters. He was an NCAA qualifier in the indoor 5,000 in 2013, and an NCAA qualifier in the outdoor 5,000 and 10,000 in 2013 and 2014.

Epperson graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. The Houston, Texas native also earned a master's degree from Mines in mechanical engineering biomechanics in 2015.
