FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State men's golf will be well represented at the 2017 U.S. Amateur, as rising junior Jake Staiano and incoming freshman Parathakorn "Poon" Suyasri qualified for the event. The tournament will be played Aug. 14-20 at famed Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., with part of the stroke play occurring at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.

"What a terrific day for the program!" head coach Christian Newton said. "It's great to see Jake continue to buy in and improve. Poon has had an incredible summer and we couldn't be happier to have him join the team in August."

Playing in the first U.S. Amateur qualifier of the season at Columbine Country Club in Columbine Valley, Colo., the pair took the top two of the three qualifying slots in the 84-player field. Staiano had a 1-shot lead after the morning round with a 6-under 66, one shot better than Suyasri's 5-under 67. However, the Thailand native shot a 4-under 68 in the afternoon to finish at 9-under 135, two shots ahead of runner-up Staiano at 7-under 137. Suyasri had one eagle, 10 birdies and just three bogeys in his 36 holes of play, while Staiano had 12 birdies and five bogeys as part of his qualifying effort.

Rising senior Colton Yates and sophomore AJ Ott will attempt to become the third and fourth Rams to advance when he plays in the qualifier at Fort Collins Country Club on Thursday, July 13.
