FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State men's golf broke two tournament team records and will take a 14-shot lead into tomorrow's final round of the 2017 Ram Masters Invitational presented by Pedersen Toyota, Sept. 18. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by CSU, is being played at Fort Collins Country Club (Par 70 – 7,218 yards) in Fort Collins, Colo.
Â
The three-time defending champion Rams got off to a strong start in the morning, with all five team members at par or better as CSU set a new tournament single-round record with a 12-under 268 to take the opening round lead by six shots. The previous record was held by Denver at 8-under 272, set in the third round of the 2013 tournament that the Pioneers won. As the heat and winds increased for most of the afternoon, so did the scores across the board, with the average round going up from 73.04 strokes to 74.08. Colorado State took advantage of it as the only team at par or better, shooting an even-par 280 to post a 12-under 548 and a 14-shot lead over UMKC in second at 562. The 548 is also a 36-hole tournament record, surpassing the Rams' total of even-par 560 in 2015. Wyoming is third at 3-over 563, with TCU two shots back of them at 5-over 565. Sam Houston State is fifth in the 19-team field at 12-over 572.
Â
"What a great day for our team," head coach Christian Newton said. "We had excellent play all around and I'm very proud of our boys. We took advantage of softer greens and easier hole locations in the morning round. The afternoon was more difficult with some wind and firmer greens, but we still performed well. Overall, I am very happy, and we can't let up tomorrow. Our guys must keep the pedal down."
Â
Sophomore AJ Ott is the leader for the Rams in a tie for fourth at 4-under 136 after rounds of 3-under 67 and 1-under 69. Senior Max Oelfke is currently sixth at 3-under 137, posting a 3-under 67 in the first round. Junior Jake Staiano is one shot back in a tie for seventh at 2-under 138, shooting a 4-under 66 in the opening round. Senior Colton Yates is next at 1-under 139, tied for ninth, with freshman Parathakorn Suyasri also in the top 20, currently tied for 19th at 2-over 142. UMKC's Francois Lagraulet is the 36-hole individual leader at 8-under 132.
Â
The final round will start with play off No. 1 and 10 tees at 8 am, with CSU starting at 9:40 and playing with UMKC, Wyoming and TCU.
