Recap: Colorado State Sweeps Past No. 15 Florida State on Saturday

9/2/2017 6:45:00 PM | Volleyball

TALLAHASSEE – For the first time since the 2012 season, the Colorado State volleyball team swept a top-25 program with a clean sheet against No. 15 Florida State on Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Home2Suites Invitational in Tully Gymnasium. CSU last swept then-No. 12 Pepperdine and last beat a ranked opponent in 2014 with a 3-2 win over then-No. 19 Colorado. Head Coach Tom Hilbert is now 15-3 against ACC schools and 1-1 this season.

The Rams (5-1) out hit the Seminoles in each set ending with a .379 mark and holding FSU to a .212. CSU also put up eight total blocks and recorded five less hitting errors than Florida State.

Breana Runnels and Jasmine Hanna led Colorado State with 15 kills apiece, while both swinging extremely efficiently – recording just one error each on a combined 60 attempts. Katie Oleksak led the offense with 43 assists and Amanda Young the defense with 14 digs.

FSU (4-1) started the match with three-straight blocks, but the Rams didn't let it faze them as they scored the next four points to take an early advantage. Both teams fought for the lead as the frame was tied at 12-12 before CSU took the lead for the final time and held on to take the set 25-21.

Set two was the most competitive frame of the afternoon, as there were a match-high eight ties and five lead changes. The Seminoles charged out to a 5-0 lead and it looked as if they gained the momentum. Colorado State again would not go down without a fight. The Rams chipped away throughout the match and eventually knotted the set at 15-15. From then, there were six different leader changes. FSU tied the set at 22-22 before CSU went 3-1 over the next five rallies to grab a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The final frame of the match was all Colorado State. The Rams strung together five-straight points early to build an 8-2 lead – one that they wouldn't relinquish. The Seminoles got within five points at 15-10 and that is the closest they would get. The Rams finished the match on a 10-5 run to take the final set easily. CSU hit .654 in the final frame and did not record an attack error, while posting a 93 percent mark in the sideout column.

The Rams will return to Moby Arena on Friday facing Ball State at noon MT. CSU will also face Michigan later Friday night at 6 pm MT.

IN THEIR WORDS
Tom Hilbert on the match…
"It was a really gritty performance. I thought we served and passed better than we have all year. Our outside hitters were great competitors and attacking everything at high points and (Florida State) couldn't stop us. It is one of those deals where we got in a rhythm with the tempo of our game and Florida State was back on their heels and it allowed us to win."

Tom Hilbert on what a win over No. 15 does to his team…
"It's big in a number of ways. We have continue to do it. We can't let this be just a one-off kind of thing. We have to continue to play well consistently over the non-conference and hopefully that carries into our conference schedule."

Jasmine Hanna on sweeping No. 15 FSU…
"I thought we played really well and it was an all-out team effort to make plays. Katie (Oleksak) was setting balls great, which allows me to play well and I think once we had momentum, we continued to play well no matter who it was. We just need to have the rhythm that we've had in the past."
