USAFA, Colo. – Colorado State men's golf posted three under-par individual rounds and had all five scorers in the top 40, pushing the Rams to the opening round lead at 2017 Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Sept. 8. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy, is being played at the Eisenhower Blue Course (Par 72 – 7,511 yards) at USAFA, Colo.
The five Rams in the lineup combined for one eagle and 19 birdies and a tournament-best 62 pars on the day, allowing them to post a 6-under 282 for a two-shot lead over Colorado and Wyoming in a tie for second at 4-under 284. UTEP is in fourth at 3-under 285, with defending Mountain West champion UNLV in fifth at 2-under 286. On the day, six teams posted a total of par or better with first through 12th separated by just 10 shots, with CSU looking to improve on last year's fourth-place finish.
"We had a great start to our season in Round 1," head coach Christian Newton said. "I know a few of our guys aren't fully happy, but it was a great team effort. We had a few struggles on the greens, but everyone does on these greens. They are very difficult to make putt if you aren't on the correct side. I am pleased with our play and patience."
CSU was led by senior Max Oelfke, who shot a 4-under 68 and sits alone in fifth. Oelfke made the turn in 1-over but shot a stellar 5-under on the final nine on five birdies and four pars to post his team-best score. Senior Colton Yates was two shots back in a tie for seventh at 2-under 70 with four birdies to just two bogeys on his scorecard. Junior Jake Staiano is one shot back of Yates at 1-under 71, tied for 16th. Sophomore AJ Ott and freshman Poon Suyasri both shot 1-over 73 and are tied for 39th, along with individual freshman Cullen Plousha. Four players are tied for the individual lead at 5-under 67.
For the second round tomorrow, the Rams will again start off No. 10 at 7:30 a.m., playing with UTEP, New Mexico State and Colorado.
