Rams’ Marquez, Smith top pentathlon field at Air Force Team Challenge

Talia Marquez scores 3,467 points top field while Gabby Smith takes second with 3,428 points
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Colorado State's Talia Marquez and Gabby Smith placed first and second, respectively, in the pentathlon as competition in the Air Force Team Challenge began with the combined events on Thursday at Cadet Field House.
Marquez scored 3,467 points for the win, while Smith tallied 3,428 points for her runner-up spot. Marquez won the long jump, and placed second in three other events among the five athletes that completed the pentathlon. Among that same group, Smith took the finished tops in each of the 60-meter hurdles and 800 meters and was third of those athletes in the remaining three events. Seven athletes competed in the pentathlon overall.
Smith's winning time in the 800 meters was 2:26.01, while her 60-meter hurdles time was 9.13. Marquez's winning mark in the long jump was 17-7.5 (5.37m). The top event for Olivia Pappas, who placed fourth in the pentathlon with 3,191 points, was the long jump (second place – 17-5.5/5.32m/648 points).
In heptathlon action, Nick Kravec sits in fourth place though four events held on Thursday. Kravec placed third among the heptathletes in each of the long jump (21-10.25/6.66m/732 points) and shot put (41-3.5/12.58m/642 points) as well as fourth in the high jump (6-2/1.88m/696 points). The senior clocked a time of 7.20 in the 60 meters to open the day.

"We definitely weren't quite crisp overall today, but they all certainly competed well. Obviously, it's early and they're tired, so I'm happy with how they competed. For a multi in January, I thought they did well, and even though we weren't exactly crisp today, we will be when it counts."
