CSU improves to 6-0 this month, finish season 8-3
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Colorado State Rams swimming & diving squad picked up a resounding victory on Friday, defeating Mountain West rival Air Force 183-114 at Moby Pool.
The win pushes the Rams record to 8-3 on the season, including a perfect 6-0 mark this month. Four of those wins have come against MW foes.
CSU won all but three individual events on the day, including both diving events. In addition, CSU sported the top three times in the 200 IM, but all three were counted as exhibition.
Senior Colleen Olson, who has overcome four hip surgeries as a swimmer, starred in her final home dual meet of her career, winning both the 100 and 200 freestyle events. The wins are her first two of the season, and provided a jolt to the entire squad.
"She swam really well and showed something that was her hallmark prior to her four surgeries, and that's coming back in the final 25 and coming back fierce," CSU head coach Woody Woodard said. "I was charged. When Colleen succeeds, the team is really happy for her because they know how hard she works."
Olson was one of six Rams to take two victories apiece:
CSU also opened up the swimming portion of the day with a win in the 200 medley relay, with Thomas, Ward, Goodwyn and Rowan Hauber combining to touch the wall in first with a time of 1:46.53.
AFA and CSU both competed at the Phill Hansel Invite in Houston in November, with the Falcons placing fifth and the Rams finishing seventh in the 10-team field. AFA defeated CSU, 158-123, in Albuquerque, N.M., last season. It's safe to say the Rams were hungry to defeat its in-state rival, but Woodard doesn't want his team to be satisfied.
"My hope is that we are constantly looking up the ladder, seeing who we can get up to next," Woodard said. "We want to keep looking forward and not in the rear-view mirror."
As the Rams turn their attention ahead to the MW Championships in San Antonio (Feb. 14-17), they do so riding one of the hottest streaks in recent CSU swimming history. Woodard and his squad know that there is still plenty of work to be done, and that the competition level at the conference meet will be very high.
"Running the table from January into the conference meet really showed a lot of character," Woodard said. "It makes me excited to see what happens next when we are well rested.
"Everybody is working hard at this point of the year, and everyone is going to get some rest. It'll come down to who put in the work all summer and all fall, but I think we will be right there."
CSU's divers will head up to Laramie, Wyo., for one last pre-conference tune-up Feb. 2-3.
