CSU has completed 36 holes and holds a slim advantage

PARKER, Colo. – Colorado State men's golf grabbed the lead in the opening round and is holding the advantage late in the second round of the 2018 Paintbrush Invitational presented by Inspirato, Oct. 8. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Denver University, is being played at Colorado Golf Club (Par 72) in Parker, Colo.

Playing in continual wet conditions and temps topping out in the low 40s, the Rams acted like their namesake, embracing the conditions and posting a 1-under 287 in the morning round to take an eight-shot lead over Colorado and Loyola Marymount at 7-over 296. Three teams, including CSU, were able to finish as CSU shot a 6-over 294 in the afternoon and is at 5-over 581. However, most still have one-to-two holes to finish, including Loyola Marymount and Colorado who are in second and third at 6-over and 9-over, respectively. Oregon is in fourth currently at 14-over 590 with all scores in, while Northern Colorado is fifth at 15-over with combined four holes of scoring to still count.

"The conditions were extremely difficult with rain, snow and sleet all day," head coach Christian Newton said. "All the guys hung touch all day. I'm so proud of that. We will come out ready to play 18 tomorrow."

Individually, CSU is led by freshman Oscar Teiffel, who is tied for second at 5-under 139 after an opening-round 70 followed by a 3-under 69 in the afternoon. Teiffel had a combined 12 birdies in his two rounds, including four in a span of six holes in the middle of the second round. Junior AJ Ott and freshman Davis Bryant are tied for 16th at 3-over 147, while senior Jake Staiano is two shots back at 5-over 149. Sophomore Cullen Plousha is the final team member in a tie for 30th at 7-over 151. CSU also has three individuals in the tournament, as freshman North Ponghathaikul is tied for 22nd with a two-round total of 5-over 149, with sophomore Jack Ainscough and redshirt-freshman Andrew Lafferty two shots behind at 7-over 151. Loyola Marymount's Riley Elmes is the 36-hole leader at 8-under 136 after a pair of 4-under 68s.

Weather permitting, the tournament is scheduled to resume with the completion of the second round at 8 a.m. MT with the third and final round to immediately follow.
