Rams Lose Final Game of Gulf Coast Showcase to South Dakota State, 78-65

11/21/2018 2:48:00 PM | Men's Basketball

CSU returns home to host Southern Illinois, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.

ESTERO, Fla. – Colorado State struggled offensively from deep and fell to South Dakota State, 78-63, in the consolation final of the Gulf Coast Showcase, Nov. 21. With the loss, the Rams fall to 4-2 on the season while the Jackrabbits, picked to win the Summit League for the third consecutive season, improved to 5-2.

CSU scored the first eight points of the game, but again, it turned into a back-and-forth early affair for the Rams, who eventually were down to SDSU, 29-28, just before the final media timeout of the first half. From there, South Dakota State went on a 19-3 run over the final four minutes of the half, including hitting seven straight field goal attempts capped a three by David Jenkins as the clock expired, to take a 48-32 lead into the halftime break. The Rams could not get it any closer than 10 in the second half, despite several chances.

For the game, Colorado State shot just 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the field and 22.2 percent (8-of-36) on threes. South Dakota State was 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the floor and an even better 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from the arc. CSU did hold a slight advantage on the boards 42-39, but neither team turned it over much, as there were just 14 combined turnovers.

CSU was led by redshirt-junior Anthony Masinton-Bonner, who had his second 20+ point game of the season with 20 points, four rebounds and two assists. Redshirt-senior J.D. Paige added 17 points and four boards, while redshirt-junior Kris Martin made his CSU debut with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. SDSU was led by Jenkins with a game-high 32 points, while Ryan Krueger was one of three other Jackrabbits in double figures with 16.

STAT OF THE GAME
The 19-4 run over the final four minutes of the first half took the game from a 29-28 SDSU lead to a 16-point margin at the break.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Niko Medved on today's game

There were a couple of things that stood out to me today. We didn't have a very good edge defensively. And maybe, in some ways - I don't know if it was the worst thing – but we got off to that fast start and the game was ragged and we scored easily and I don't know if we had this mindset because they're a terrific offensive team. Early in the game, we weren't what we needed to be. In the second half, we were much better. We did a good job on (Mike) Daum tonight. I thought they followed the game plan well on him. Jenkins really got going and some of those were easy shots and some were tough.

We had an awful shooting night tonight, there's no question. You look at the box score and you say I don't want to shoot 36 threes, but the way they were guarding us, I think most of those were uncontested. But we can't walk out of here and say we didn't shoot the ball well and that's why we lost because it won't be the last time. That's the way basketball goes. Sometimes, you've got to find a way to win those games when it's not going your way. We had some chances to get back in it but we could never get over the hump.
