Early start not enough for Rams in first round against Tennessee

11/30/2018 11:22:00 PM | Volleyball

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Colorado State volleyball team took a 2-0 match lead against No. T19 Tennessee, but couldn't hold on as it ended its season with a 3-2 loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Rams came back from a 17-11 deficit in the opening set and won the second to take a 2-0 match lead before falling in five.

Tennessee responded after the intermission, taking the next two sets after taking early leads in both to even the match at 2-2. In the final set, both teams traded points to start, but the Lady Volunteers put together a five-point scoring run to lead 9-6. Colorado State responded with a three-point run later on to tie the frame at 10-all and again at 11s. Tennessee used a pair of kills and a block to reach match-point and took the match 15-12.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"We're disappointed to lose this match, but we had a wonderful season. When you lose a match like this, you have to look at the positives that we had this season. We played very well a few different times this year and improved in several different areas. I thought tonight, for about 60 percent, we played at a high level. We did a great job playing clean in the offensive part of the game. We also out blocked Tennessee tonight which shows that we were prepared. Tennessee's outsides are generally productive for them and we did a good job on them tonight. UT was defensively better than us tonight and they were winning most of the long rallies and really finished plays better than we did because they were able to dig balls."

STAT OF THE DAY
The Rams tied their season-best with 18 blocks in the match led by Paulina Hougaard-Jensen who tallied a season-best and tied a career-high with 10 stuffs.
