Rams rally in final nine holes to move up six spots through 18 holes
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – In an event that features 15 teams ranked in the top 100 according to Golfweek, the Colorado State men's golf team rallied in their final nine holes of the opening round to post an even-par 284 and sit in fourth after the first round of the 2018 Saint Mary's Invitational, Nov. 5. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Saint Mary's College of California, is being played at the famed Poppy Hills Golf Club (Par 71 – 6,945 yards) in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Starting on the back nine, CSU totaled 5-over among its eventual counters and was in a tie for 10th. However, the Rams rallied with every player opening the final nine with a birdie on No. 1 and the four counters totaling even-par 284. BYU is in the lead at 13-under 271 on the strength of Peter Kuest's tournament record 1-under 61, putting the Cougars 10 shots clear of Pepperdine in second at 3-under 281. Arizona is third at 2-under 282, just two shots ahead of CSU. San Francisco rounds out the top five teams at 1-over 285 as just 12 shots separates second from 10th.
Freshman Oscar Teiffel is leading the CSU effort through 18 holes, as the Swede is tied for fourth at 2-under 69. Teiffel made the turn in 2-over but rallied with five birdies to one bogey in the final nine holes of the round. Junior AJ Ott is next in a tie for 13th at even-par 71, while sophomore Jack Ainscough and freshman Davis Bryant each recorded totals of 1-over 71. Senior Jake Staiano rounds out the team at 7-over 78, tied for 88th.
