CSU breaks pair of relay records on Wednesday
SAN ANTONIO – The Colorado State Rams set two program record during the first day of the 2018 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championship at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center on Wednesday, the first day of the four-day meet.
There were only two swimming events on Wednesday, and CSU set school records in both.
CSU's star foursome of junior Tonicia Thomas, freshman Maddie Ward, sophomore Marie Goodwyn and senior Rowan Hauber completed the 200 medley relay in 1:39.77, breaking the school record set at last year's MW Championship by 0.51 seconds. CSU placed sixth in the event.
Later, juniors Ida Donohue, Kelsey Lawton, Haley Rowley and senior Colleen Olson combined to break the school record in the 800 freestyle relay, touching the wall in 7:20.01. That mark broke the previous top mark (also set at the MW Championship last year) by 2.45 seconds. The time was good for a fifth-place result and 50 team points.
"I'm so proud of our girls," CSU head coach Woody Woodard said of his team's performances on Wednesday. "They showed resilience and grit and get to bring home two new school records as a reward."
The Rams totaled 98 points on Wednesday, putting them into a tie for ninth with Air Force. Nevada and San Diego State are tied atop the team standings with each posting 189 points on the first day.
CSU's diving trio competed in the 1-meter springboard preliminaries on Wednesday. Freshman Skylar Williams posted a 214.11, placing 25th in her first MW Championship event.
The action at the 2018 MW Championship will resume tomorrow with prelims and finals for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 free relay and the 3-meter springboard.
