Rams defeat Nevada, 75-64, on Senior Day

2/24/2018 7:32:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Rams paced by Annie Brady, who scored a career-high 21 points in a double-double

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Led by a 21-point, 10-rebound outing from junior forward Annie Brady, the Colorado State women's basketball team defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack, 75-64, in the Rams' Senior Day game on Saturday at Moby Arena.

Brady tallied her career-best 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting, and corralled six of 10 rebounds on the offensive glass en route to her fourth double-double of the season. Senior guard Hannah Tvrdy shot 7-for-14 from the floor in an 18-point performance, and added nine rebounds and a team-high five assists. Fellow seniors Stine Austuglen and Veronika Mirkovic added seven points and four points, respectively. With New Mexico's loss on Saturday, Colorado State (19-9, 11-6 MW) locks up at least a top-five seed and a first-round bye in the 2018 Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship.

The first half featured hot shooting from each team, as Colorado State tallied a field goal percentage of 53.6 percent (15-for-28) over the first two quarters and Nevada (12-15, 5-11 MW) shot 46.4 percent (13-for-28). CSU led for much of the first quarter, but found itself in the opposite situation in the second, trailing the Wolf Pack for 7:21 in that period. The key stretch offensively for CSU in that period was at a 32-27 deficit with four minutes to go in the first half, as Brady, Tvrdy and Jordyn Edwards combined to power a 7-0 run and head to halftime with a 34-32 lead.

Nevada tied the game twice more, once at the 8:52 mark in the third quarter and once at 7:48. One minute later, the Rams retook the lead, 38-36, on a Brady layup and held onto it for the final 16:37. CSU's initial separation began at the 1:40 mark in the third, as freshman guard Lore Devos scored the first six points of a 9-0 run and Sofie Tryggedsson punctuated it with a three to put the Rams up, 57-46, with 8:20 to play.

The Rams made one final late run to put the game well out of reach, turning a 67-58 lead with 3:30 to play into a 17-point advantage with 30 seconds to go. CSU seniors scored six of those points on a pair of Tvrdy layups and a Mirkovic jumper, and combined with two Brady free throws to give the Rams breathing room before the lead narrowed back down to the final 75-64 result.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"I thought in the first quarter the kids came out very aggressive and hit some nice pull-ups. They were just hunting down their shots against a Nevada team that was going to guard us tough. I just liked the mind-set all day: It was confident and it was (to) attack. That's probably why we put 75 up. I liked how confident the kids were, and how they played to win the basketball game."

On Annie Brady's performance:
"This was an Annie (Brady) type of game. The first time we played them it was an Annie type of game: Athletic, strong, explosive, powerful…somebody that could probably drive a little bit from that mid-post area and rebound. Annie was huge today. She's been playing good basketball. This was a good matchup for her and she excelled."

On the fan support at Moby Arena:
"We always notice the crowd and we surely felt them today. This was going to be an energy type of game. We knew it was going to be close. When we see some momentum and made some good plays we could really feel the crowd, hear the crowd, and that's what 'Moby Magic' is all about. I like the way everybody came out and celebrated these three seniors, because these three have been incredible for this program."

Junior forward Annie Brady
On the matchup with Nevada:
"Nevada is a tough squad, and I don't know if some reason that helps me a little bit, being able to play really physical. This is a time of the season to start stepping up and we've got a lot to accomplish still. We've got a tournament to get ready for and I think that's on everybody's mind as we close out the season."

On the seniors:
"Those guys, they work so hard and they've been so fun this season. They just are very welcoming and loving, and to get a win for them in their last game in Moby, that's how we wanted to send them out."

Senior guard Hannah Tvrdy
On her experience on Senior Day:
"It was definitely emotional. I was even tearing up during warmups. It was crazy, but I think getting this huge team win was awesome. There's been so many memories in Moby, so I'm just enjoying the moment. We're not done yet, and we know that. My teammates are just the best, honestly. I really enjoy them."

On bouncing back from losses in the Rams' two most recent games:
"We needed it (the win) after those two heartbreaking losses. We knew we wanted to get back in there and kind of end that little streak. It was huge. A lot of people played well. The confidence is rolling again, and we need that going into New Mexico and to Las Vegas."
