Rams Seventh Through Two Rounds of ASU Thunderbird Invitational

Junior Jake Staiano leads the Rams in a tie for ninth
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Colorado State men's golf team is seventh after 36 holes of the 2018 ASU Thunderbird Invitational, April 14. The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by Arizona State University, is being played at Karsten Golf Course (Par 71 – 7,032 yards) in Tempe, Ariz.
The Rams started the day solidly with a 7-under 277 (fourth best under-par round of the season) that put them in fourth place behind host No. 25 Arizona State (274), No. 27 UNLV (276) and No. 11 Baylor (276). However, the Rams slipped three spots in the afternoon 18 due to a 6-over 290 to complete the day at 1-under 567 through the first two rounds. Arizona State and UNLV are tied for the lead at 18-under 550, three shots ahead of No. 3 Oklahoma in third at 15-under 553. Baylor is currently fourth at 11-under 557, with No. 32 Arizona rounding out the top five teams at 6-under 562. The Rams trail No. 1 Oklahoma State by just two shots heading into the final round tomorrow.
CSU is paced by junior Jake Staiano, as he is tied for ninth at 3-under 139, posting a 4-under 67 in the morning 18 and then a 1-over 72 in the afternoon. Staiano's morning round included seven birdies and three bogeys en route to the team-best round of the tournament so far and his 15th round of par or better in 26 rounds of action this year. Sophomore AJ Ott is next at 1-over 143, tied for 28th, with freshman Parathakorn Suyasri one shot back in a tie for 37th at 2-over 144. Suyasri was able to post a 2-under 69 in the morning, including five birdies and an eagle. Senior Max Oelfke is tied for 44th at 3-over 145, with freshman Jack Ainscough tied for 63rd at 7-over 149. UNLV's Shintaro Ban and Colorado's Yannik Paul are tied for the individual lead at 9-under 133, one shot better than Quade Cummins of Oklahoma and David Laskin of Arizona at 8-under 134, tied for third.
The Rams will conclude play starting at 7:11 am PDT (8:11 MDT) off No. 1, playing primarily with Oregon State.
