AJ Ott shoots a career-best 66 in the first 18 holes to lead CSU's effort

BREMERTON, Wash. – The Colorado State men's golf team opened with a team total of 4-under 284 in the first 18 holes and is currently tied for the lead after the first round of the 2018 Mountain West Championship, April 20. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the Mountain West Conference, is being played at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club (Par 72 – 7,115 yards) in Bremerton, Wash. The winner of the tournament earns the league's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Regionals.

The Rams went off in the first wave with top-seeded UNLV and led for much of the first 18 holes, eventually finishing a 4-under in a three-way tie with the Runnin' Rebels and San Diego State. Fresno State is three shots back in fourth at 1-under 287 with San Jose State in fifth at even-par 288. In all, nine teams are within 12 shots of the lead after the opening round of play.

Sophomore AJ Ott shot an opening round 6-under 66 and is the 18-hole individual leader. Ott had one eagle, five birdies and just one bogey on the day en route to tying for the third-lowest CSU single-round score in conference tournament history. It also tied Ott's lowest 18-hole score of the season and his career as a Ram. He leads a trio of golfers by two shots – UNLV's Shintaro Ban, Grant Booth of Nevada and Sean Talmadge of San Jose State.

"It's nice to be off to a good start and put ourselves in a good position for round two," head coach Christian Newton said. "AJ's round was very special. He had a few awesome chip-ins to keep the momentum going. I'm happy for him."

Junior Jake Staiano also was one of 14 players in the field to post an under-par round, shooting a 1-under 71 that puts him in a tie for 11th. Freshman Parathakorn Suyasri is tied for 19th at 1-over 73, with fellow freshman Jack Ainscough one shot back at 2-over 74. Senior Max Oelfke shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 37th.

The Rams will go off in the final wave for the second round, beginning on No. 1 at 10:40 am PT and playing with San Diego State and UNLV.
