Senior Max Oelfke posts a team-best 4-under 68 in the second 18 in windy and rainy conditions
BREMERTON, Wash. – The Colorado State men's golf team tied for the third lowest round of the day and is in second after two rounds of the 2018 Mountain West Championship, April 21. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the Mountain West Conference, is being played at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club (Par 72 – 7,115 yards) in Bremerton, Wash. The winner of the tournament earns the league's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Regionals.
On a day where wind and rain had an effect on play, the Rams played in the final wave and battled the conditions to a 5-over 293 and are currently at 1-over 577, five shots behind leader UNLV. The Runnin' Rebels had the only round of even par at 288 and are at 4-under 572. Fresno State and Wyoming are tied for third at 6-over 582, with Nevada rounding out the top five teams at 8-over 584.
Sophomore AJ Ott is the top CSU player after a 3-over 75 today put him at 3-under 141, six shots behind leader Shintaro Ban of UNLV at 9-under. Junior Jake Staiano posted an even-par 72 and is tied for ninth at 1-under 143. Senior Max Oeflke had the best round of the day for the Rams with a 4-under 68 and moved up to a tie for 11th at even-par 144. Oelfke opened the day with a bogey on his first hole and did not make another the rest of the day, posting five birdies to reach his 4-under score. Freshman Jack Ainscough is tied for 35th at 8-over 152, with fellow freshman Parathakorn Suyasri tied for 43rd at 11-under 155.
"The conditions were tough at times today," head coach Christian Newton said. "I'm proud of how the guys hung in there and finished well. I had feeling Max had a good round in him, and I was right. I think the guys are excited to compete for the championship tomorrow."
The Rams will conclude the conference event on Sunday, going off No. 1 starting at 10:40 am and playing with UNLV and Fresno State.
