Rams’ Linnea Jonsson tops 200 feet in the hammer for a No. 26 NCAA ranking

BOULDER, Colo. – The women's throwing events continued to be one of the highlights of the Colorado State track & field team's outdoor season so far, as multiple Rams registered season or personal bests en route to three wins in those events at the Colorado Invitational at Potts Field on Saturday.

Linnea Jonsson registered her best hammer performance of the season on her fifth attempt of the day, winning the event with a throw of 200-3 (61.03m). Prior to Saturday, only 25 athletes in the nation had a better mark than Jonsson in the women's hammer. Kelcey Bedard placed second in the hammer with a mark of 199-4 (60.77m), while Aimee Larrabee finished third with a personal-best throw of 192-1 (58.55m). Larrabee moves up to 11th on CSU's all-time list in the event with her performance, while all three rank among the nation's top 52.

Bedard followed with a first-place finish in the women's discus, winning the event with a mark of 165-7 (50.48m). Maria Muzzio placed second in the women's discus with a personal-best 161-1 (49.10m), and finished as the top collegian in the women's shot put (47-7.57/14.52m) and behind only CSU's Tarynn Sieg (48-9/14.86m), who competed unattached. Muzzio's discus mark ranks 18th in program history.

Men's and women's hurdles were among the highlights for the Rams on the track on Saturday. Jalen Hunter placed as the top collegian in the men's 110-meter hurdles, finishing with a personal-best time of 14.21. The senior's performance moved him up to eighth on CSU's all-time outdoor list in the event. On the women's side, Destinee Rocker placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.50, which was over half of a second better than the rest of the field.

Full pole vault results were not available at the time of this writing; however, reports from the meet indicated that each of Aliya Simpson and Gabby Smith cleared 12-5.5 (3.80m) in the pole vault. That mark would move Simpson up to sixth on CSU's all-time outdoor list in the event. Josie Spitz rounded out top performers in the women's pole vault by clearing 12-3.25 (3.74m), which is the No. 8 mark on CSU's all-time outdoor list.

Running in the fastest heat of the day, Cole Rockhold took fourth place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.15. That marked the junior's first 800 meters race of his collegiate career, and his time ranks as the No. 17 on CSU's all-time outdoor list. Rockhold's time unofficially converts to 1:50.46 (altitude).

Carson Hume clocked a time of 3:52.53 (3:46.99 with altitude conversion) in the men's 1,500 meters and currently ranks in the NCAA's top 50 in the event. Highlighting results in women's distance events was Dominique Ward's third-place finish and time of 4:33.35 (4:26.84 with altitude conversion) in the 1,500 meters.

McKenzie Wright had the top women's high jump mark on Saturday, placing second based upon number of misses with a mark of 5-7.25 (1.71m). Rounding out top field events for the Rams on Saturday was the men's shot put, where Austin Blaho and Alex Blaho placed first and second, respectively. Austin Blaho's winning mark was 56-1.25 (17.10m), while Alex Blaho's best effort was 54-10.75 (16.73m).

Among the top performers in the women's sprints was Jessica Ozoude, who took first place in the 400 meters with a time of 55.99. Lettia Wilson took first place in the women's 100 meters, finishing with a time of 11.97. Punctuating top performances for Colorado State was a sweep of the women's and men's 4x100-meter relays. The CSU women placed first with a time of 45.41, while the Rams' men finished in 42.32 for the win.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Brian Bedard
"I would give our team a 'C ' if I was to grade them. I think our coaches trained our athletes through this meet a little bit, and we looked like it. In other cases, we may not have been as focused as we needed to be. We did have some personal-best performances, so I don't want to ignore that. We did have some positive things today. I thought certain event groups looked tired or a little beat up, so we need to take a look at that as a staff. We just need to continue to get better."

Colorado State sprints and hurdles coach Karim Abdel Wahab
On Jalen Hunter and Destinee Rocker:
"We had seen some good practices out of Jalen and were hoping it would be translated in a meet. He made it happen today and hopefully it'll be the start of many better marks to come. Destinee has been very consistent with minimal wind today, running a 13.50. We're really hoping that with better competition later in the season that she can run another PR."

NOTES
- Only Lorenda Holston and Destinee Rocker have run a faster time in the women's 100-meter hurdles than Rocker's 13.50 on Saturday.
- Jalen Hunter's personal-best time of 14.21 in the 110-meter hurdles was an improvement upon his previous best by .37 seconds (March 24, 2018 at Mines Nature's Bakery Invite).
- Cole Rockhold now ranks within the top 20 all-time performers in three outdoor events at Colorado State.
