CSU posts an even-par 288 in the rain-soaked first 18 and is five shots out of an advancing slot
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Battling rain throughout most of the round, the Colorado State men's golf team opened the 2018 NCAA Kissimmee Regional with an even-par total and is tied for ninth, May 14. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Central Florida, is being played at the Reunion Resort's Watson Course (Par 72 – 7,154 yards) in Kissimmee, Fla.
The day started with rain and an hour and 10 minute delay just after freshman Parathakorn Suyasri had teed off on the first hole. The Rams battled and made the turn in a combined 3-over par but came back in 3-under, among the counters, in the final nine to post an even-par 288 in a tie with Purdue. No. 8 Florida is tied with host UCF for the 18-hole lead at 12-under 276, four shots ahead of Kent State in third. South Florida is fourth at 6-under 282, while top-seeded No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 17 North Carolina are tied for the final advancing spot in the region at 5-under 283.
The Rams have a pair of players under par after the opening round, as junior Jake Staiano and sophomore AJ Ott each posted a 1-under 71 and are tied for 21st. Each had four birdies on the day, with Staiano posting three of them in a four-hole stretch on the back nine. Senior Max Oelfke and freshman Parathakorn Suyasri are tied for 41st at 1-over 73, with freshman Jack Ainscough tied for 61st at 4-over 76. Inividually, there is a four-way tie for the individual lead at 5-under 67, as UCF teammates Juuso Kahlos and Bobby Bai, George Cunningham of Arizona and Kent State's Chase Johnson all posted the low score of the day. In all, 40 players in the field were at par or better on the first day.
The Rams will start their second round on Tuesday at 8:55 am EDT off No. 10, playing with Saint Mary's (Calif.) and Coastal Carolina.
