Mountain West recognizes 29 Rams with all-conference honors for 2018 outdoor meet

Rams’ Jalen Hunter honored in team-high three events; Mostafa Hassan, Jessica Ozoude, Destinee Rocker, Cole Rockhold, Ronald Sayles and Darius Smith recognized in two events
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West has awarded all-conference recognition to 29 members of the Colorado State track & field team for their respective performances at the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The conference announced the accolades on Monday.

Those 29 Colorado State athletes combined to earn a total of 37 All-Mountain West honors. Senior Jalen Hunter led the Rams with three honors, earning recognition for his 110-meter hurdles title, as well as for his roles on the Rams' men's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams.

Also receiving recognition in multiple events were Mostafa Hassan (shot put champion, discus), Jessica Ozoude (4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay), Destinee Rocker (100-meter hurdles, 4x100-meter relay), Cole Rockhold (5,000 meters champion, 1,500 meters), Ronald Sayles (4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay) and Darius Smith (400-meter hurdles, 4x400-meter relay).

Of the remaining honorees from CSU, three more were individual event champions. Those athletes were Autumn Gardner (high jump), Jerrell Mock (10,000 meters) and Maria Muzzio (discus), Mock (29:24.87) led a podium sweep in the 10,000, as Grant Fischer (29:35.20) and Eric Hamer (29:38.14) also earned all-conference recognition in the event.

Those three, along with Luke Giugliano (29:41.47), all finished at least eight seconds under the previous meet record in the event to mark the first time in meet history that any team has ever had the top four finishers in any men's distance event. Rockhold also registered a meet record-breaking performance, clocking a time of 13:55.36 en route to his 5,000 meters title. Other record setters included Rocker, who set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles (13.21), as well as the Rams' women's 4x400-meter relay team (3:40.63).

Joining Hunter, Ozoude, Rocker, Sayles and Smith with recognition in the relays were Annemarie Carlson, Jasmine Chesson, Will Domier, Nathan Gish, Michelle Gould, Caleb Hardy, Marybeth Sant and Lettia Wilson. Domier and Gish were part of CSU's men's 4x100-meter relay team, while Sant and Wilson were members of the women's squad. Hardy ran on the men's 4x400-meter relay team, while Carlson, Chesson, Gould and Ozoude combined for the school's record-setting women's 4x400-meter relay.

The event area with the largest all-conference representation for CSU was the throws, which included seven honors. In addition to the accolades earned by Hassan and Muzzio, each of Kelcey Bedard (hammer), Austin Blaho (shot put), Linnea Jonsson (hammer) and Bailey King (hammer) also earned distinction.

Along with Gardner, four other Rams picked up honors from the Mountain West on Monday, including Danny Baumgardt (triple jump), Isa Bynum (long jump), Trenton Wallace (high jump) and McKenzie Wright (high jump).

Rounding out All-Mountain West accolades for the Rams were four honors in the hurdles. In addition to the aforementioned honors for Hunter, Rocker and Smith, Garrett Lane also was recognized for his third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles.

The Colorado State track & field team will have a week away from competition before qualifying athletes compete at the NCAA West Preliminary from May 24-26 in Sacramento, Calif. The list of qualifying athletes will be announced in the coming days.
