Rams to send 26 athletes to 2018 NCAA West Preliminary

Rams qualify 16 athletes on the women’s side and 10 on the men’s side
INDIANAPOLIS – The Colorado State track & field team will send 26 athletes to the 2018 NCAA West Preliminary, as announced by the NCAA in its list of qualifying athletes on Thursday.

Of the 26 Colorado State athletes that qualified for regionals, 16 are members of CSU's women's team and 10 represent the Rams' men. CSU's qualifying athletes will compete at the NCAA West Preliminary from May 24-26 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.

In order to qualify for preliminaries, athletes generally must rank within the top 48 declared athletes in her or his respective events within that athlete's region, while a relay is generally is required to have a top-24 rank. The top 12 finishers in those respective events at the NCAA West Preliminary will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which is held from June 6-9 from Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Colorado State's largest representation in any single event area is in distance events, which will feature 11 qualifying Rams. On the women's side, each of Darby Gilfillan (10,000 meters), Sanne Holland (3,000-meter steeplechase), Ali Kallner (1,500 meters), Roxy Trotter (1,500 meters) and Dominique Ward (1,500 meters) received bids. Six Rams reached regionals in men's distance events, including Grant Fischer (10,000 meters), Wayde Hall (5,000 meters), Eric Hamer (10,000 meters), Carson Hume (5,000 meters), Jerrell Mock (10,000 meters) and Cole Rockhold (5,000 meters).

Six throwers will travel to Sacramento, Calif., to compete for CSU. On the men's side, defending NCAA West Preliminary shot put champion Mostafa Hassan and Austin Blaho (shot put) each earned selections. Three women qualified in the hammer, including Kelcey Bedard, Linnea Jonsson and Aimee Larrabee. Bedard also qualified in the discus, as did MW champion Maria Muzzio, who added an additional bid in the shot put.

Rounding out qualifiers in field events are a trio of CSU high jumpers. Each of Autumn Gardner and McKenzie Wright reach regionals on the women's side, while Trenton Wallace will compete for the Rams in men's competition.

Accounting for the remaining individual qualifiers are a pair of Rams in each of the sprints and hurdles. CSU record holders Jessica Ozoude (200 meters) and Destinee Rocker (100-meter hurdles) each reached preliminaries, as did CSU's all-time No. 1 freshman performer in the 400 meters, Jasmine Chesson. On the men's side, Jalen Hunter will once again compete in the 110-meter hurdles following his conference championship performance.
In addition to the individual events, the Rams' women's 4x100-meter relay team enters as the No. 21 seed. The team is made up by the group earned All-Mountain West honors at the recent outdoor meet: Marybeth Sant, Lettia Wilson, Ozoude and Rocker.
