Senior Grant Fischer will make fourth NCAA Championships appearance in track & field

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Grant Fischer of the Colorado State track & field team will represent the Rams at the NCAA Outdoor Championships following his performance in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary on Thursday from Hornet Stadium.

In order to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in any individual event, athletes must place in the top 12 in their respective events. For the preliminary round, each of the West and East regions featured a 48-athlete field (96 total).

Fischer, a senior from Fort Collins, Colo., clocked a time of 29:16.75 in the 10,000 to finish 10th and clinch his fourth career NCAA Championships appearance in track & field. Fellow senior and four-time All-American Jerrell Mock narrowly missed a berth to the national meet in Eugene, Ore., closing a remarkable career with a 14th-place finish in the same event (29:24.10).

Junior Roxy Trotter moved on to Sunday's quarterfinals in the 1,500 meters with a 16th-place finish of 48 athletes. Trotter, who ran in the meet's fastest heat, clocked a time of 4:23.28, a new personal best and the second-fastest time in program history. In the case of this event, the top 24 moved on to quarterfinals in each of the West and East regions. Sunday's quarterfinals will determine NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifiers.

Autumn Gardner capped off an exceptional senior season with a 19th-place finish in the women's high jump. Teammate and fellow senior McKenzie Wright placed 21st in the event. Gardner, a Mountain West champion and CSU's record holder, cleared 5-8.5 (1.75m). Wright, a 2018 all-conference performer, cleared the same height and finished lower based upon misses.

Jasmine Chesson capped off her freshman season with a 40th-place overall finish in the women's 400 meters. Chesson, the Colorado State freshman record holder in the event, clocked a time of 55.24 in the second-fastest heat of the night.

Rounding out Thursday's top preliminary performances in field events was Maria Muzzio's 40th-place finish in the shot put. The sophomore, who will compete in the discus on Friday, recorded a mark of 48-4.5 (14.74m) in her final shot put competition of the season.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State distance coach Art Siemers
On Grant Fischer:
"The West is just very, very deep – there's multiple All-Americans that didn't get through in the 10k today. The first mile or mile-and-a-half was really tactical, and once the pace picked up, there were probably about 20 guys with a chance to get in that final 12. The last lap or so was pretty brutal, but Grant was tough and put himself in a good position. He's a very savvy runner and had a good sense of where he was in the race – he knew he just had to be in that top 12 – and he punched his ticket. He had great experience in the 10k last year and he'll take that and see if he can't get on the podium last year."

On Jerrell Mock:
"The West is just so tough, but Jerrell has had a tremendous career here for the Rams. I think that he's going to take it to the roads as a post-collegian and represent Colorado State very, very well."

On Roxy Trotter:
"She had a great day today. She came in seeded in the 40s, and to PR on a really windy day in this setting and move on to the next round of the preliminary is spectacular. It's a really nice bounce-back for her, and for her to get the second-best time in a program history in a setting like this is a testament to her resilience and how tough she is."

NOTES
- The only athlete in CSU history with a better 1,500 meters time than Roxy Trotter was three-time national champion Wendy Knudson, who set the program standard with a time of 4:21.80.
- Grant Fischer makes his second NCAA Championships appearance in the 10,000 meters. The senior placed 12th in the event at nationals last season.
