CSU wide receiver Olabisi Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard mark receiving for the second time in five games this season and freshman wide receiver Nikko Hall tallied his first career touchdown in the defeat.
The Rams got out to an early 6-0 lead on a touchdown pass from K.J. Carta-Samuels to Johnson, but the Redbirds put up three unanswered touchdowns to make the score 21-6 early in the third quarter.Â
CSU quarterback Collin Hill also added a touchdown pass, connecting with running back Marvin Kinsey for a 14-yard score with 1:36 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Rams have a bye week next weekend before heading on the road to resume league play at San Jose State on Oct. 6.
NOTES:
- Colorado State is now 9-2 against FCS opponents since 2006
- This was CSU's first loss in the annual Ag Day game since 2010.
- The Rams' defense held the Redbirds to just 4-of-14 on third-down conversion attempts, but Illinois State was able to extend drives by going 2-3 on fourth down.
"We're not very good right now. That's the bottom line. We're not very good. We have to figure out some things to do over this next bye week. I think it's coming at the right time. We have to coach better. All that starts with me as the head coach." -- head coach Mike Bobo on the status of the team
Â
"We're going to go back to work. It probably falls on deaf ears, but we have to handle ourselves in that room and figure out what we can do to put ourselves in a position to compete. There's a lot of football left to play. The only thing that matters next week is getting better at competing and figuring out how to compete on the road at San Jose State." -- Bobo on the outlook moving forward
"Everything is still ahead of us (in the Mountain West). Everything we want to do, everything that we are capable of is still in front of us. We have a bye week and still have to prepare for this game coming up." -- senior running back Izzy MatthewsÂ
Â
"We have the guys and the leadership to turn this around. We have a lot of guys who are capable and who love the game of football." -- more from Matthews
