CSU slips over closing holes and is tied with Cal, Florida and North Florida
ROCKY FACE, Ga. – The Colorado State men's golf team slid at the end of their opening round at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and are tied for 11th, Sept. 7. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by Georgia Tech University, is being played at The Farm Golf Club (Par 72 – 7,178 yards) in Rocky Face, Ga.
In a field of 15 teams that features 13 from last year's NCAA Regionals and the NAIA National Runner-up, the Rams finished the day at 13-over 301, tied with Florida, Cal and North Florida. CSU got off to a solid start in the first wave off the tee and headed into the final five holes of their day at even par. However four of the seven hardest holes took their toll on the team score, as CSU could not finish off the day. Tennessee is the 18-hole leader at 8-under 280, one shot ahead of host Georgia Tech at 7-under 201. Alabama and Kennesaw State are tied for third at even-par 288, with Clemson rounding out the top five teams at 2-over 290. Just 10 shots separate sixth from 15th in this highly competitive field.
"We were very close to posting a good round today," head coach Christian Newton said. "We stumbled some on the last few holes. If you do that in this strong of a field, you will fall down the leader board. I think we will learn from our mistakes and improve moving forward."
The Rams' first round was led by freshman Davis Bryant, as the newcomer had four birdies and two double bogeys en route to an even-par 72 and a tie for 22nd. Senior Jake Staiano and junior AJ Ott each shot a 4-over 76 on the day and are tied for 49th. Sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri is tied for 58th at 5-over 77, with sophomore Cullen Plousha completing the team effort at 10-over 82 in 80th. Davis Riley of Alabama is the opening round leader at 4-under 68, one shot ahead of four golfers in second at 3-under.
Colorado State will start its second round on No. 10 and playing with North Florida and Dalton State, starting at 8:22 am ET (6:22 am MT).
