Redshirt-junior center averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two MW wins last week
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State redshirt-junior Nico Carvacho has been named Mountain West Player of the Week for his performances last week, the league announced this morning. This is the first time Carvacho has earned a weekly honor from the conference in his career and the second for a CSU Ram, as redshirt-senior J.D. Paige was recognized on Nov. 19.
Carvacho was instrumental in two Mountain West victories this week over Air Force and New Mexico. The Frisco, Texas native averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in the wins, while hitting on 67.9 percent (19-of-28) of his shots from the floor and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the free throw line. He also added four assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
Against the Falcons, the center had game-highs of 27 points and nine rebounds while also handing out four assists. He made 12 of his 16 field goal attempts and was 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Even with foul trouble that limited him to 19 minutes against UNM, he still posted 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds and two steals.
Carvacho currently leads the nation at 12.4 rebounds per game and ranks seventh in the league at 16.2 points per game. He also leads the league in field goal percentage at 60.3 percent, which ranks 30th nationally. He also owns the top two and four of the top seven rebounding games in the Mountain West this season. From his efforts against Air Force and New Mexico, Carvacho now ranks fifth on the Colorado State career rebounding chart with 747 rebounds.
The Rams will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 19, traveling to Logan, Utah to take on Utah State. Tip off is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network and CSU Sports Network.
