27890FORT COLLINS, Colo.--The Colorado State Athletics community mourns the passing this morning of Dale Dodrill, a 1951 graduate of Colorado A&M and 1998 inductee to the Colorado State Athletics Hall of Fame. Dodrill, a U.S. Army veteran who fought in World War II, was 92 years old.

Dodrill played nine seasons for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, earning one All-Pro and four Pro Bowl selections, and is a 1993 inductee to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dale Dodrill," said Director of Athletics Joe Parker. "He not only embodied everything that it means to be a Ram and an Aggie, but everything that it means to be an American, through his brave service to our country. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Born Feb. 7, 1926 in Stockton, Kansas, Dodrill graduated from Loveland (Colo.) High School where he played on a state championship football team. Following his graduation he was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the 30th Infantry Division in World War II. Dodrill fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a Browning Automatic Rifleman.

30147When he returned home from the war, Dodrill chose Colorado A&M because he could play as a freshman on the varsity squad for coach Bob Davis in 1947. Dodrill played all four years for the Aggies, earning three all-conference honors. He helped lead the team to the 1949 Raisin Bowl and an overall 28-11-1 record during his career, playing alongside CSU legends like Fum McGraw, Jim David, Eddie Hanna and Jack Christiansen. Dodrill was selected to play in the 1950 East-West Shrine Game and won the Nye Award as the Male Athlete of the Year at Colorado A&M. He would later be voted to the CSU Football All-Century Team.

After his graduation in 1951, Dodrill was chosen in the sixth round of the 1951 NFL draft and played nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, earning one All-Pro honor and being voted to the Pro Bowl four times. In 1960 he joined the newly formed Denver Broncos of the American Football League as a coach and retired from football in 1965 to operate a successful insurance business.
