FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After a four-week layoff from the season's opening meet, both of Colorado State's cross country teams will return to competition Friday at the Joe Piane Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame.

The first race of the day is the Women's Blue Division, the premier women's race of the event, at 1 p.m. ET. Colorado State will field eight total runners in the 5,000-meter run. Following will be the Men's Blue Division, an 8,000-meter race, with another eight Rams competing. The Blue Division races feature 11 of the top-30 teams on the men's side and the women's side.

On Sept. 6, the Rams began the 2019 campaign at the Wyoming invite with success as the women finished first and the men third. Since, both squads have rested and prepared diligently for the heart of the season.

In the USTFCCCA national rankings, the men have climbed to the No. 13 spot, and have stayed at No. 4 in the Mountain Region – the toughest of the nine regions. The women reside in the No. 6 slot in the Mountain Region.

After the Blue Division's there is two open divisions in which three CSU men and three CSU women will be competing in.

On the event…
"When we looked at the potential schedule this year, we decided to change it up. We had been going to the Roy Griak Invitational, but we didn't go last year, because Wisconsin hosted the NCAA Championships, so we decided to go to pre-nationals instead. This year, we wanted to go to Nuttycombe [Invitational on Oct. 18], because of the benefit of getting points over going to pre-nationals. Then we needed one more big meet. Notre Dame has in the past been a star-studded meet when we used to go to it and we played it right, because it is a stacked meet. We'll get to see how good we are. It is early in the season and we'll get better, but it will be a great test."

On the women's side…
"This women's team has the most depth and the most talent up front since I've been here. The last time they have made the NCAA Championships has been 2007 and every year our goal is to be one of those top teams to make it. That is no easy feat. You have to have depth and front runners. We are finally at that place with our women. We have really good returners that did their homework over the summer. We have one of the best high school runners in the country in Ashlyn Hillyard who is ready to go. Then you throw in our transfers that bring another dynamic and we are excited. This is the time to see if we are going to be a team to compete and make it to Terre Haute, Ind. [site of NCAA Championships]. Again, it's just the beginning, so we'll learn and continue to adjust."

On the men's side…
"For the men, the opening race was a rust buster with good competition against Wyoming and Colorado. We had an average day except for the freshman and redshirt-freshman who showed great potential. Our varsity guys were training hard around that time, so they were tired. The invite didn't count for qualifying purposes, so it was a fine start to the season. Since, we had a month on the schedule for training and getting 100% healthy. Now we are mentally and physically ready for this meet."
