Rams Sign Broin, Hjelm To National Letters of Intent

Coming off three wins this fall, CSU adds to the program for the 2020-21 year

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After its most successful fall ever, Colorado State men's golf has signed Gunnar Broin and Rasmus Hjelm to National Letters of Intent, head coach Christian Newton announced today. The pair will join the roster for the 2020-21 season.
 
"I am very happy with this class and it looks to be one of the best we have signed yet," Newton said. "They both have the ability to compete for a traveling spot right away. I want to welcome both Rasmus and Gunnar to the Ram Family."

Gunnar Broin, Chanhassen, Minn. (Minnetonka HS)
Currently top ranked junior in Minnesota, #79 in 2020 Class on Junior Golf Scoreboard… Has four amateur wins, one other top 5 and an additional top 10… Three-time Minnesota High School Coaches Association All-State Selection (2017, 2018, 2019)… Four-time qualifier for the Minnesota Class AAA State Championship, finishing third in 2018 (12th as an individual)… Helped his school to a state title as an eighth grader in 2016 and runner-up in 2017 (finished 14th individually)… Tied the state record with a 63 during his junior year… Captains Pick for Minnesota/Wisconsin PGA Junior Cup Matches in 2018 (helped Minnesota to a 20.5-15.5 win) and qualified for 2019 matches (Minn 21-15 win) – 2019 won singles match 2 & 1 over Brock Hlinak of Kaukauna, Wis. … 2019 Minnesota Boys Junior PGA Champion by two shots… Qualified for 2019 Boys Junior PGA Championship… Tied for 10th at 2019 Minnesota State Open Championship (77-64-72=213 (-3)) after tie for 44th in 2018… Also won 2019 Raven Invitational – FBGA – PING Jr Masters at Raven GC in Phoenix… Also notched a T10 in January at the Wigwam Invitational, which is also a PING Junior Masters Series tournament… 2017 AJGA Junior All-Star at Calumet Champion
 
Head coach Christian Newton:
Gunnar will be an excellent addition to 20-21 roster. We have had a long line of successful SA's from Minnesota. He possesses a tremendous amount of club speed. He is #1 ranked player in Minnesota and won twice on the AJGA to name a few of his accomplishments.
 
Rasmus Hjelm, Hollviken, Sweden
Currently #666 in World Amateur Golf Rankings, European Golf Rankings is #228 overall and 82nd in U21 European rankings… Played his amateur golf out of Ljunghusen Golf Academy… Played in the 2019 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan, representing Sweden and helping them to a seventh-place finish… Tied for 18th individually at the event with 73-68-67-72=280 (-4)…Finished second in the 2019 Swedish Teen Tour Elite event at Barseback  with 69-67-69=205… Also finished third at the 2019 Swedish Grand Opening… Placed 55th at the 2019 R&A Boys Amateur Championship in stroke play to advance to match play, where he fell in 20 holes to the top-ranked player in the field… Also competed in the European Boys' Team Championship in France, shooting a 2-under 70 in the final round…
 
Head coach Christian Newton:
Rasmus has been committed to CSU for quite a while. He comes from the Swedish National team which their players always adjust well to college golf and have excelled. He has had great success on a national level with several top 20 finishes in top worldwide amateur fields.
