Rams’ Kelcey Bedard and Amelia Harvey win women’s weight throw and long jump, respectively, on Friday; Adam Dawson places as top collegian in men’s weight throw

BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado State track & field team collected individual event victories in the throws and the jumps as the Rams completed the first half of the Colorado Invitational on Friday from the CU Indoor Practice Facility.

Rams finished as the top collegians in each of the men's and women's weight throw, and featured a personal-best performance from freshman Adam Dawson. The native of Parker, Colo., threw the weight 62-2.25 (18.95m) to best all collegians by over half of a foot and register the second-best mark by any Ram on the men's side this indoor season. On the women's side, senior Kelcey Bedard won the weight throw with a mark of 66-8 (20.32m), the best in the field by over five feet. Bedard's mark from Friday has only been topped by 22 other athletes in the NCAA this indoor season.

Junior Amelia Harvey was also among the event winners for the Rams on Friday, topping the women's long jump field with a leap of 18-11.25 (5.77m). Sophomore Marlee Brown was second after jumping 18-3 (5.56m), while junior Aria Tate cleared 18-2.5 (5.55m) for third place. Among the other notable marks in field events was that of junior Josie Spitz, who cleared 12-5.5 (3.80m) in the women's pole vault. Her mark was tied for the second-best at the meet and was good for third place based upon number of misses.

The top finisher among Colorado State's milers in Friday night's seeded sections of the races was senior Roxy Trotter, who placed fifth overall and fourth among collegians with a time of 4:54.91 (4:47.64 unofficial altitude conversion). Junior Ali Kallner joined her among the top five collegians with a time of 4:55.26 (4:47.98 unofficial altitude conversion). On the men's side, the top time was logged by senior Trent Powell, who placed seventh and sixth among collegians with a time of 4:12.89 (4:06.65 unofficial altitude conversion).

Other than event winners, the next-highest finisher in field events was senior Tarah Vijayasarathy, who placed second in the women's triple jump (39-5.25/12.02m). Freshman Lexie Keller (women's high jump – 5-5.25/1.66m), sophomore Antwan Ross-Jones (men's high jump – 6-7/2.01m) and senior Dalten Fox (men's triple jump – 45-1/13.74m) each finished third in their respective events on Friday.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Brian Bedard
On Adam Dawson's performance:
"He's looked really good in training, so it's just been a matter of him trying to duplicate that when they call his name up for competition. He was able to that today. He did a good job of staying coachable and did a good job of executing, and when you do those things it usually turns out pretty well. It was a good step for him. I've been challenging him and his teammate Bailey King to compete a little bit, and it's both been fun for them and produced some good practice throws back-and-forth. It's definitely been helping them get ready for meets, and I think there's more to come."

NOTES
  • Senior Kelcey Bedard has won the women's weight throw in all four meets she has competed in this indoor season.
  • In three of those meets, Bedard has had a winning mark of 20 meters or better.
  • Junior Amelia Harvey has now won in each of the horizontal jumps this indoor season (triple jump at Air Force Team Challenge on Jan. 18).
