Suyasri leads the effort in a tie for third at 3-under 69
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Colorado State got off to a solid start and is tied for the lead after the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Feb. 22. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Wyoming, is being played at Classic Club (Par 72 – 7,305 yards) in Palm Desert, Calif.
"The team had a nice start to the tournament," head coach Christian Newton said. "We teed off in the last wave and ended up playing in the wind most of the day. The boys handled the windy conditions well."
Playing in the final wave of the day off No. 1, the No. 47 Rams battled wind the majority of the day and still managed to post a 2-over 290, putting them in a tie with No. 18 Texas Tech. TCU is third, one shot back at 3-over 291, with Mountain West rival Boise State in fourth at 5-over 293. No. 39 Kansas and Colorado are tied for fifth in the 21-team field at 9-over 297.
The Rams are paced by sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri, who shot a 3-under 69 and is tied for third individually. Suyasri rallied after opening with bogeys on the first two holes to play the remainder of the day in 5-under, posting six birdies to just one bogey in the final 16 holes. Senior Jake Staiano and freshman Davis Bryant each carded 1-over 73's and are tied for 11th. Bryant was consistent on the day, with 13 pars and a pair of birdies, while Staiano recorded three birdies on his round with 11 pars. Junior AJ Ott posted two birdies on his final four holes and is two shots back at 3-over 75, tied for 34th, with freshman Oscar Teiffel completing the team scoring in a tie for 47th at 4-over 76. Playing as individuals, sophomores Cullen Plousha and Jack Ainscough are tied for 64th at 5-over 77. TCU's David Ravetto and Skyler Eubank of Boise State are tied for the individual lead after shooting 4-under 68 in the opening round.
CSU will return to the course at 8 a.m. PT, delayed an hour due to anticipated frost in the morning, with the Rams playing in the first wave off No. 1 with Texas Tech, TCU and Boise State.
