Early slow start dooms Rams in loss at Wyoming, 74-66

2/9/2019 4:57:00 PM | Men's Basketball

CSU shoots just 7-of-22 in the decisive first half

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming got off to a hot start, especially from beyond the three-point arc, and Colorado State could not overcome it in a 74-66 Mountain West loss at Arena-Auditorium Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Rams fell to 9-15 overall and 4-7 in MW action, while the Cowboys improved to 6-17 and 2-8 in the league.

CSU was down 19-6 in first six minutes of the game as Wyoming hit first seven three-point attempts to eventually build a 19-point lead. CSU chipped away and got it down to 10 but went into the halftime break down 37-22. The Rams got it down to seven at 48-41 in the second half but got it no closer until the final seconds as the visitors struggled to hit field goal attempts throughout the game.

CSU shot just 42.3 percent (22-of-52) for the contest, including just 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from the floor in the decisive first half and 0-of-7 from the three-point arc. Wyoming was 23-of-48 (47.9 percent) overall but a stellar 13-of-24 from three-point arc. CSU did hold a 33-28 advantage on the boards.

CSU had just two players finish in double-figure scoring, as redshirt-senior J.D. Paige had 16, while redshirt-junior Nico Carvacho had 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Wyoming was led by the Mountain West leading scorer Justin James with 36 on 10-of-14 shooting from the field.

STAT OF THE GAME
Wyoming finished the game hitting a season-high 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from the three-point arc while the Rams were just 6-of-19 (31.6 percent).

IN THEIR WORDS
Head Coach Niko Medved
His thoughts on overall game
"I'm just very disappointed with today. Just start by giving credit to Wyoming. They completely outplayed us in every way. They were tougher. They were more together. They were more poised. They played with more energy. They just completely took it to us in every way. You just got to give a lot of credit to them. We were not ready to play today. I don't know if it is a hangover from Nevada. All we talked about was that I knew that they (Wyoming) would play well. I knew they would come out here and play hard and want to beat you in the worst way and you had better be ready for that. And clearly, our approach in the first 10 minutes of the game, for lack of a better word, I thought kind of embarrassing."
