Rams shoot a 3-over 353 and are seven shots back in the Golf Channel-televised event

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Colorado State overcame some shaky early holes and rallied the remainder of the day to post a 3-over score to sit in fourth after the opening round of the 73rd Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf Monday. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by San Jose State and televised on Golf Channel, is being played at Pasatiempo Golf Club (Par 70 – 6, 615 yards) in Santa Cruz, Calif.

In the unique play-six, count-five format, the No. 46 Rams got off to a slow start, with the eventual counting scores going 7-over on the third hole, the most difficult hole in the opening round. However, CSU got it back on track and eventually posted a 3-over 353 to sit in fourth, seven shots behind opening-round leader and host San Jose State at 4-under 346. No. 6 Southern Cal and No. 39 Oregon are tied for second two shots behind at 2-under 348. The Rams sit in fourth, with No. 11 California and No. 16 Stanford tied for fifth at 4-over 354. In a field with 10 teams ranked in the top 73 nationally, there is just 13 shots separating first from eighth.

Individually, CSU had a pair of under-par rounds, as senior Jake Staiano and sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri each shot a 1-under 69, currently in a tie for ninth. Sophomore Jack Ainscough is tied for 21st at 1-over 71, with junior AJ Ott and freshman Oscar Teiffel one shot back at 2-over 72 in a tie for 31st. Freshman Davis Bryant completes the scoring for CSU in a tie for 55th at 5-over 75. Three players are tied for the 18-hole lead, as Justin Suh of Southern Cal, Sean Yu of San Jose State and Stanford's Isaiah Salinda all posted a 6-under 64.

IN THEIR WORDS
Head coach Christian Newton

On his team's opening round
"It was really good. We had all six guys in it the entire time. We got off to a little bit of a rough start on one, two and three, as those are the hardest holes on the course. But they rebounded really nicely and made some birdies on the stretch coming in. Overally, I am really pleased with how the guys played."

On rebounding after the struggles on No. 3
"They didn't really bat an eye. Any time you can see double bogeys and then follow them up with birdies, it shows their mental toughness. We did in making a couple of birdies on No. 4 and then made some more coming in and got back going."

Senior Jake Staiano
On the value of having played the course before leading to his 1-under 69

"I was able to stay patient, for sure. Just knowing where the pins were prior to the round and knowing where you can miss and where you can't here is huge because if you miss in the wrong spot, it leads to at least bogey if not double bogey. I was able to really plot my way around this golf course and figure out a way to take advantage when I could and, when I couldn't, I was able to put it in the middle of the green or solid area of the green and make par."
